Question to members about contributions from Professionals

Maybe only HCP's who are also diabetic should be allowed.As several posters have pointed out many of us are here because we are unable to trust the HCPs we have encountered because we have received poor advice and treatment or because he advice was not right for us as individuals.

I know that we already have HCP;s who are also diabetic posting here . It is often fairly obvious who they are. I don't want to hear the "received wisdom " of the NHS just regurgitated here ubnless there is some added value ie the HCP having some prersonal experience of the condition or at least, posting from the patient's point of view, Their input is then invaluable.

Perhaps there could be a particular section for HCP's who are bot diabetic but wish to offer some advice- those whio do not wan to sell something that is.

I thought you knew by now....... If you get somebody on here posting in a pompous arrogant manner and telling you what you have to do, that what you are doing is impossible, despite the fact that you have been doing it for ages and it does work - well of course he/she MUST be a professional !

Your memory must be going again you auld ****** !

This is a very good point. I don't think we should stop ANYONE posting - but HCP's with Diabetes would be most welcome.

What a good point .......

I must remember to ask my cardiologist if he has ever had a by-pass, ask my oncologist if he has ever had Cancer .........I am sure they will know much more about the conditions if they have.

They'll know exactly what they were taught to know.

But they WON'T have the insight that can only be gleaned by living with the condition.

I beg to differ Patch, whilst I have not experienced the type of illness that is present in the clients that I nurse, I learn more and more about it from seeing how it wrecks their lives and the people around them. Observation and sympathy play a big part in helping people with conditions. I cannot experience empathy as I am not suffering but I can still help. I don't demonstrate pity but a willingness to understand how it must be to walk in their shoes.

You're looking at the wrong side of the coin, Catherine (and I'm not saying you can't understand a condition because you don't have it).

You're applying what you have learned about a patient from interaction to your treatment of the patient (or your own understanding of the condition). What a HCP that actualy HAS the condition is able to do is to apply what they know to be true (from living with the condition) to what they have learned about the condition through study.

It's this level of insight that would be invaluable to this site as a source of information.

Give me a specialist that lives with the condition over one that DOESN'T any day of the week.

Surely Patch, because I am willing to learn and will research about the illnesses, then I am able to help? Some HCP's do their job, go home and that is it. A HCP who is interested in helping their fellow man is an asset on this forum because they research as well. They wouldn't bother coming here if they were not interested.

Nothing Patch, I am just putting reasons forward for why some HCP's without diabetes could still be an asset here. They may learn more as well as giving advice. This will enhance their understanding and who knows, they may be willing to speak out against some of the dubious advice that is given to diabetics. We can all teach others as has been shown when friend's of diabetics come here for advice.

Catherine I think you are right even if we do not have the condition we still have a lot of experience with many individuals. However there could also be problems with HCP with diabetes - they could over personal advice that would break a code of conduct!

Personally, I think that HCPs are an asset, it is the labelling them as HCPs, that I don't like. I am sure that in most cases it would be fine, but giving someone s post more importance than others, when they are unproven and untested on the forum seems wrong. I know that all (say) dieticians etc, are all qualified and tested in real life, but in this virtual world, it is difficult to see behind the avatar and the user name.

There are other things that diabetics can succumb to. Where would some posters be without the valuable advice that Sugarless Sue has given because of her knowledge in her professional capacity. UTI's, sore toes, ENT complaints etc......... She is a diabetic but also knows about other acute or niggling complaints and she also knows when to advise that the poster should see their G.P. because it could be 101 things not diabetes related.

This really is a can of worms. :lol: :lol: :lol:

No it's not - you've blown it out of proportion. I'm sorry if what I said upset you - but I didn't say what you heard.

I never said you were at a disadvantage if you are aHCP that is in perfect health. That would be foolish. But it seems like that is they way you took it.

But the idea of HCP's that have similar experiences to my own posting here, does appeal.

I think the consensus here is against this idea. Personally I find it very simplistic, naïve and badly thought out !

Mind you - since when has what the majority want mattered .......

Can I ask - are those of you that are against professionals posting, actually against them posting completely, or against them being identified as professionals within their posts?

TBH - as far as I'm concerned, good advice is good advice, and I couldn't care less if the person offering it is identified as a qualified professional or not.

Maybe we could have a verified section in a members profile for relevant qualifications?

That way, if we are unable to determine a persons credibility from their posts, at least we could sneak around and check their credentials... :twisted:

I don't know, this thread has had 788 views, but only 56 votes.

As it stands 18 voters think it is a good idea, 34 voters think it is a bad idea and 4 voters don't know/don't care.

What about the other 732? Even allowing for repeated views of the thread by those that actually voted, everyone else that read this seem (by their lack of vote) to fall into the "don't know/don't care" category.

Yep ........apathy reigns ! Its always been that way here. There are only a few regular posters here despite the 30,000 plus membership. Still if the others don't vote that's their problem.

What concerns me more than this exercise is that I just answered a member who needed help. The OP had over 80 views and yet not one person even attampted an answer despite the post being bumped up twice ! Where is the help and support this new member came here for !

The fuss over all the new ideas and this about HCP's is detracting from what should be taking place ..
