Hi all, newbie here

I was diagnosed with type 2 about a week ago, after being very thirsty and tired. The wife suggested I go to the dr, being a person who does not like the Dr, I bought the blood glucose tester on Amazon, to prove I was ok.

Did the test to see if was 26mmol/L around 10pm. Agreed with her that maybe I should go to the GP. Completed the online form at 8 when it opened had a call within 10mins with a 9am appointment.

I was at 16 now, not eaten anything for over 12 hours. Blood tests taken, and tablets prescribed. As I’m not overweight, exercise and diet isn’t to bad, test to see if it’s late onset type 1.

Called back later that day saying my HbA1c was 105, and another appointment for 8:30 for the next day.

Anyway to my question, I got a free trial of a continuous monitor, as fingers were getting sore with all the pinpricks, and I’ve noticed a pattern. I take a metformin with every meal, and and gliclazide with breakfast and lunch. Eating low carb diet.

Around 4am my levels are about 11, when I wake up at 7:30 with level around 4. By 10am it’s hit 12 with no breakfast. Are breakfast at 10, with my meds. Levels drop to 4 by 11, they start dropping within 20 mins of eating.

By 2pm they are up to 11 again, have lunch and within 30 mins hit 5. Raises to 11 by 6:30pm, by 7 I hit 3.7 a few sweets to get my levels up and at 8:20 I’m now a 7.

Is this normal, i would expect the levels to go up after eating not shoot down?

Hi and welcome.

I'm a bog standard T2 and what you're reporting is out of my experience. I understand you're still waiting final confirmation of diagnosis, though? And obviously your meds will be active as well.

I'm going to tag a couple of people who have more experience than me in this sort of thing. @Antje77 @Lamont D

Best of luck

Hi and welcome @Johnpen , a quick question, are the blood sugars readings taken from your CGM ? And, if they are, is this your first day wearing it? The new sensor needs 24 hours to settle. After the first 24 hours your reading will very likely settle. When I'm wearing a sensor and I get odd readings I x check my cgm reading with a finger prick test. If you get two completely different results go with the finger prick blood reading. There is also the possibility you have a faulty sensor. Again, check those cgm results with a finger prick reading. They will not be exactly the same, but they shouldn't be hugely different.
Also as you have just been prescribed blood sugar lowering meds, your Dr may wish to see how you are getting on with them. If your blood sugars are still bouncing around like that, and this is confirmed with a finger prick test, if it was me I would go back to your Dr and give your GP your readings and see what he/she says.

Hi Melgar, thanks for the reply. I’ve had the CGM for 5 days, verified the reading with finger prick. I’m sending the details to Dr in the morning

That sounds like a good plan @Johnpen. It is what I would do too. Your Dr will be in a position to change your meds /dosage if needs be. Let us know how you get on. :). Feel free to keep asking questions.

I applaud your positive go-getter take on this, and feel sure that you will improve significantly having done what you are doing. Do stay with us for information and support, and don't hesitate to ask any questions.
