Does anyone know if drinking alcohol e.g. stout over the course of an evening raises blood glucose levels. And does it aggravate the disease because of the affect alcohol has on the pancreas?

stout will increase blood glucose as there are carbs in it.............everyone will be different, usually in terms of the effect..........
usually a pint of beer, lager, stout will contain 10-20g of carbs and so you would expect a rise in blood glucose of anything between 2-6mmol/l........

alcohol as far as I know has no direct effect on the pancreas, however the liver is effected. Its normal production of glucose if hindered as it try to process the alcohol, meaning less glucose will be circulating, and if on any medication, pills and/or insulin, blood sugar can drop......

again, everyone is different.......I can have a bottle of red wine and have no hypos that night or the next day but with a half bottle of vodka, I will almost certainly have hypos the following day.....

Hi,
All Alcohol contains Carbohydrates, and Sugar, some types more than other's.
If you drink with a Sweetened Mixture this adds to the Sugar.
Depending on what and how much you drink will defiantly have some adverse effect.
Your Liver mainly deals with ridding or cleaning your system of alcohol, and drinking to much will cause Liver damage, and not really damage to your Pancreas as far as I know

Well, not all alcohol contains carbs, vodka for instance. Anyway, as for beer, I ignore carb content as initial rise is offset by a later drop due to alcohol. Test before, during and after. Make sure you test prior to sleeping and have a carby snack if required to ensure you don't go hypo during the night ( if on insulin ).

One of the main causes of acute & chronic Pancreatitis is alcohol . so yes alcohol does have an effect on the pancreas and none of it good. Anybody suggesting sinking a half bottle of vodka or bottle of Red wine a day with Diabetes is a seriously misguided. Even without Diabetes it’s not too bright this will lead to major long term health risks. http://pancreatitis.org.uk/. 2-3 alcohol units per day for male adult = a medium (175ml) glass of wine. Or Spirits - 40% 25ml (Single) a 750 ml bottle of 12% wine contains nine units http://www.nhsggc.org.uk/content/default.asp?page=s1737

Through testing, I have found that 1 pint if beer (lite ale, lager or guiness) at meal times reduces my BG levels, but 1 1/2 pints increases it. Red wine has little effect on my BG levels, whether a single glass or a bottle.... A bottle over a few hours might even slightly reduce my BG levels.

I often wondered about that. It's kinda confusing. So basically the alcohol itself cancels out the carbs so it's ok to drink then? or?

I should switch to the vin rouge then!

I don't drink alcohol anymore...feel better for it lol
