Quick or Stupid Question! BG reading

Hello wise ones!

T2, managed by diet (thanks to this group and their amazing knowledge). Readings usually sit around 7-9. (GP happy with that).

I have reintroduced a v small bowl of porridge to my diet today at lunchtime. Reading before eating was 6.2 (12 hr empty tummy), and just done it now it’s 8.9.

My thinking is, that’s a jump, but not a massive worrisome spike. Thoughts? Discuss!

It would probably be higher an hour or so later. Whole grain porridge (the so called healthy type as opposed to the microwave type) 'keeps you fuller for longer' - what that means is it gets digested slower than breakfast cereals, which in turn means that it takes longer to release it's glycaemic load and thus it takes longer for a Type 2 diabetic to experience Peak Blood Glucose from eating it.
If you aren't worried by slightly smaller BG peaks but of much longer duration, then I think you need to re-evaluate the effect of lower BG peaks vs a higher ( or at best equal) HBa1C.
 
You don't say how long after eating the 8.9 result was. But for me it would be a definite no, the blood sugar level thay say is where possible complications are born is 7.8, so I try to keep below that as much as possible.
Plus it's above the 2mmol rise in 2hrs limit I set myself, generally I try to ensure my post meal number is back in the same range as my pre meal one. I will only consider a rise of 2 acceptable occasionally with something I enjoy.
Why do you want to introduce porridge back into your diet? If you think you need more fibre, there are less carby ways of getting it.
Another reason for me is the amount of insulin my poor pancreas would have to pump out to reduce that 8.9.
My whole diet is aimed at reducing the amount of insulin circulating, in order to improve my insulin resistance.
Eating something as carby as porridge would for me be counter productive.

Apols. 8.9 was about 1.5 hours after eating. I’ve just tested again (so about 2.5 hrs later) and it’s actually still 8.9.

I’ve missed oats quite a lot, wanted to see what the impact would be. Hence just giving it a go. If it doesn’t work I’ll just go back to missing them!

Honestly given those readings I’d say skip them and if need be try some of the alternatives out there. It wasn’t horrific but it wasn’t good. Whilst you’re experimenting keep testing today to see just how long it takes to get back to the 6.2 region.

7-9 generally isn’t awful but it’s not normal, though you don’t say when these are before or after meals? If they are post meal then that’s better than if they are premeal. Knowingly adding a rise of more than 2mmol on top of that would be a no from me either way if I was being sensible.
