hi guys , can anyone advise me on whether or not quorn products will help me keep my carbs down ?
some of the foods are quite tasty and i could get used to them ,

many thanks

dave

As a confirmed Carnivore, Quorn is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. (But don't tell anyone...)

It's fine (for me at least). The burgers, sausages and chicken style pieces are great. Afraid the Quorn mince just don't cut it for me though...

Depending on the product Quorn can have anything from 3g to 27g carbs per 100g.

You would need to test to see how it affects you. 27g carbs per 100g certainly wouldn't be my choice, much too high for me.

Dave,

My wife was eating Quorn products when she was on the Slimming World diet a few years back, I must admit some of them are quite tasty but as Cugila has pointed out watch for the carb content.

I was just wondering this myself a few days ago and had a roam around the net about it  I think Quorn itself has no carbs but the added ingredients in the ready meals and so on can be quite high in carbs so I think if you check before you buy and pick the least amount of carbs, Quorn would be an exellent substitude for a lot of things...

What about soya products? I'm not talking Soya Milk, I mean the flesh... Hmmmm :?:
My foster mother used soya flesh a lot in things like sauce for spaghetti instead of beef, pork or lamb and also for chili sauces and I have to say, I would never have known if she hadn't told me afterwards :P

Eiche - I've noticed they're selling the soya "mince" in tesco's now. I'm tempted to try it... Do you use it just like beef mince? (Fry it then add bolognese sauce, for example?)

I'm having Thai Green Curry tonight, made with Tofu pieces. They're supplied fried - I buy 'em from the Chinese Supermarket.

Quorn do a similar thing - marinated tofu pieces. They're nice - great in stir fries and curries.

Soya Products.......if you think it's all good news, you might want to read up on it first, especially if you are Male. Here is just one article which lists some of the Pro's & Con's. Make your own minds up..

I'm a veggie and use quorn a lot, it suits me fine and doesn't do to much damage to my BG. BUT I mainly use the chicken pieces, sausages, mince and bacon. I occasionlly ahve the burgers or lamb grills but they are higher carb.

I don't eat the fillet with breadcrumbs etc as they are quite carbiferous, as are the ready meals, because they usually have rice or potatoes or something in them as well.

If you are cooking something tasty the the pieces and mince are quite a good as they take up flavour but they don't need much cooking at all. I make spagetti bolognese, chile, a 'lasagne' using slices of celeriac, hotpots again using celeriac, curry. I make a cheese sauce with cream and melted cheese and pour it over quorn and caulifower, for a caulifower cheese.

But quorn does ocntain carbs so if you are counting carefully don't forget to include it in your totals.

No I started to use Quorn now. My foster mother used the soya mince instead of beef, pork or lamb. I really couldn't tell that it wasn't meat!

I absolutely LOVE meat, but well it's all too much fat and one still has lots of weight to shed so I swapped the meat for the quorn mince.

I'm a little sceptical about that report. If you sit and think about it for a minute.... Soya beans and the products derived from them are a staple in Asia. Asia is VERY over populated and they seem to be VERY healthy and also seem to grow very old...

I will do a bit more digging around though and see :)

I'm sceptical about everything I read too.......here is another one for your perusal. Make of it what you will. There are loads more if you ferret about on the Net.......

Don't get me wrong, I have tried some Soya products. Not too keen on any of them, but not sure if good or bad.....even if they are liked by others.

I have a veggie friend who's always trying to show me quorn tastes the same as meat or that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I've tried loads and I bloomin' well can tell the difference! The only soya product I have is milk and that took some getting used to but I have discovered that in chai lattes it is nice and means I can indulge with no guilt! :D

Quorn and soya are different products made form different things, I eat quorn but am not keen on soya.
As to whether they do or don't tast elike meat? well I haven't eaten meat for 30 years so I have no idea, but I like it so I use it.

Neither taste anything like meat. I suppose you could argue that the Quorn "Chicken STYLE" pieces have a very similar look and texture to chicken - but th etaste is not similar.

Nice, though.

The chinese supermarket that I go to DOES sell vegetarian versions of Duck, Chicken and Beef. (Mostly in cans...) My missus is a vegetarian, and she couldn't stand them! She said they tasted TOO MUCH like meat, and she couldn't believe that they were veggie.

Is that good, or bad??? :?:

When I used to eat vegetarian meals ( 3 times a week before being diagnosed T2 ) for 'my health', I never ate pretend meat. There were so many nice recipes to try but they did tend to be quite carb heavy. My favourite was an onion and leek hot pot with caraway seeds topped with a cheese scone, yummy! That's the kind of things I miss now :(

Quorn mince in a tomato sauce is rather nice and difficult to tell apart from beef mince, my wife made spaghetti bolognaise one night using Quorn mince and I can highly recommend it in this type of dish.

I'm a veggie and was wondering if you can eat quorn on a diabetes diet. I was only told last week with type 2 and told to try to control with diet for three months to see how I get on then the doctor will decide weather to put me on tablets or stick to diet. I have be told not to test my Bg. See the DN tomorrow so hopefully will get some answers

If you read the initial posts in this thread you will see that it all depends on the product as carb values will vary..........testing will tell you what affects your Bg levels.
