Radio Four - lunchtime today

Hi

I too had been advised to eat Carbs and one of the main culprits I found was my daily breakfast porridge which, after I had managed to lower my levels, caused large spikes that lasted for hours! Now I am very careful about the Carb intake I have and what a difference in just 1 month. Not only have I lost 10lb but my BG levels are averaging around 5.5 and sometimes I am even below 5.
My clinic suggests (and I quote) "Why not try reduced sugar desserts e.g. sugar free jelly or Angel Delight.". Have you seen the list of chemicals in Angel Delight and it is 60% carb. They also say on their website "Bread, other cereals and potatoes - Eat all types and buy high fibre kinds whenever you can, e.g. wholemeal, brown rice and pasta." All of these have now been cut and I couldn't be happier.
I do understand how people react when faced with advice from professionals, but I think it's time to start questioning this advice and taking more control ourselves of what we eat. When they say "evidence shows that..." ask to see this evidence.

It feels as if a revolution is about to take place.

At http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/Our_Views/Position_statements/Low-carbohydrate-diets-for-people-with-Type-2-diabetes/ they quote the UK COMA guidance from 1991....

"For a 2000kcal diet, the recommendation for carbohydrate is 225–300g per day (45–60%) (2)."

the percentage is of energy.

Phil

Yes - we get nowhere: "low carb may work for you, but we give the best advice."

I'm now on the DUK facebook & am trying to make a difference there.

Be careful Mac-Nutrition you're an HCP and we're all just dangerous fanatics

Ian,

I've just been over to the Diabetes UK facebook too! I posted a link to the Radio 4 program and asked what people thought.. more just to try and generate a bit of discussion than anything.

'we give the best advice' sounds about right! Too many corporate ties?

I think you need to get to know me a bit more... you're the first person in a long time that has called me a HCP... my money is that I'm just as fanatical as you are...

Welcome Mac,

We're mostly too busy ripping each others throats out over whose definition of "low-carb" is best.

Who's low carb is best? ...sounds interesting! Perhaps a new thread to start
