Raised ESR

Not really diabetes related but I know you guys are knowledgeable and just trying to put my mind at rest a bit. Fortunately now have my type 2 under control with diet/exercise. But with my last Hbac test (40) my GP ordered some other general blood as I’ve had a few fevers well actually 3 in last 4 months the last one particularly nasty, actually may have been Covid as didn’t test. So everything was completely normal apart from my ESR which was 24 range 0-20 so not massively raised. It’s actually weird because I have a history of ME/CFS but my ESR is usually very low like 2. So was a bit shocked to be 24. I don’t have any other obvious symptoms except feeling very post viral after last fever 2 weeks ago. Actually starting to wonder if might be long covid. Anyway just wondering if the tail end of this virus is most likely cause for the raised ESR. As all other bloods ok and no specific symptoms. I’ve got to repeat test in a month.

No idea what my score is, but every year i get the call from a worried doctor asking questions to do with leukemia etc.
My inflammatory markers are raised, each year i explain no, no problems. Last year a new doctor actually looked back through my records and said "oh every test for the last 6 years has been the same". I believe mine is referred to as Thrombocytosis, an imbalance in the number of red and white cells. Perhaps it is what caused my strokes, as the doctors don't have a clue what did.

Excuse my ignorance but what is ESR?

It’s basically a marker for inflammation in the body. It’s a very vague marker really and doesn’t point to anything specific. It just sort says something isn’t quite right and is used with other indicators to make a diagnosis. I have read it is raised with Covid and can take a while to return to normal. As I have no other obvious indicators I’m guessing mine is raised from one the last virus I had.

My dear mum had a raised ESR for most of her life. Investigated once in 1976. Apart from her Arthritis they couldn't find another cause. Every time she had blood tests it would pop up raised. In the end they just ignored it. She lived to 95. She was also type 2 Diabetic in her later years.
Don't worry too much.
