Type 2 Random glucose of 13.1 and hba1c of 7.2

Hi all
I'm a type 2 diet controlled diabetic (managed this for 7 years now) and I'm due to have my gallbladder removed in a few weeks and this week had my pre op assessment. I have just been phoned by the pre op nurse to tell me my random glucose was 13.1 and my hba1c was 7.2. At present I am diet controlled but she has asked me to see my GP about starting on diabetic medication. I am looking for peoples views on what I can expect from my GP. I have been following a low gi diet but over the last few months have found it hard to combine this with also eating a very low fat diet for my gallbladder problems. Should I wait out the time till I've had surgery and can resume a better low gi diet or take what I think will be the inevitable offer of metformin? Feeling a bit disheartened at the moment so seeking your advice.

I have no knowledge of what will work best with your particular health problems. However I am an enthusiastic Metformin user, taking the maximum dose by my own choice. It is a tried and tested drug with lots of beneficial side effects. It is strongly advised to start with the lowest possible dose and work up, to avoid digestive upset, which is quite likely, so you might not get up to a big enough dose to make any difference to your bg before your op., but if it is not counter-indicated IMO it would still be worth starting taking it. You seem to have quite high bgs despite your GI diet. A low carb is usually found to be far more effective than Metformin alone or low GI in reducing bg levels. It might be worth having a go at that straight away, as the results can be swift. Given that you are avoiding too much fat, you would not want to eat very low carb, but a reduction that you can manage without starving might still help, which would be all to the good going into your operation.

Low GI foods have exactly the same effect on me as high GI ones, if they contain carbs they are converted to sugar as soon as I chew them, that is what saliva and its enzymes do.
To lower my BG levels I have to eat low carb. It works wonderfully well.

I am exactly the same. I did follow low GI for a while but it didn't work for me whereas low carb has been brilliant.

I am not medically qualified but do think that if your doctors are happy for you to be on Metformin then it might be a good move. You could think of It as a temporary measure to keep your blood sugars under control while you are waiting for your gall bladder op. You have done brilliantly managing diabetes through diet for all these years and have done well to only have an HB1aC of 7.2 in the run up to your op.

If I was in your situation I would definitely need metformin or insulin again as I couldn't control my blood sugars if I was having to go low fat for my gall bladder. I definitely wouldn't think of it as a failure - but just a way of keeping me healthy until I could resume a diet that controlled my blood sugars.
