Hey I'm a type 1 diabetic aged 14 and last week I fell sick with ketonacidocis but I have no clue why. I had all my insulin all the right amount and all injected correctly.. The hospital didn't tell me how I managed this. Can anyone help with why this happened?

Hi Jacob :)

I'm going to move this to the Type 1 forum for you as you may get more replies there from fellow Type 1s :)

Sorry you've been ill. I hope you're feeling a lot better now.

Were your blood sugars running high when you became ill? Did you have any other illness like a cold or some kind of infection?

Could your insulin pen (or whatever you use to administer it) have been faulty?

I had DKA a few years ago when the pen I used malfunctioned. It was one of the type that had an insulin-filled cartridge inserted into it, and apparently it turned out that the glass had cracked and the insulin leaked out into the pen, instead of through the needle into me. It looked and felt as though it was working properly, but obviously wasn't, though the fault wasn't picked up until I was in hospital and resumed doing my own injections. I'd been fine while I was on the drip, then everything went haywire when I started using my own pen again, and when that was checked, it turned out to be faulty.

I now use the pre-loaded pens and haven't had that problem again. I also check they're working now, which I should have done before, of course, but didn't.

Bloods were Running about 28.0 but before I was ill it was fine running anything from 6.0-8.0 and had a little cold 2 weeks before but nothing much

Wasn't my pen cause hospital checked that and the cartridge so unless I had a dodgy needle but if that was the case when I squirted out the insulin I would of noticed
