Rare Treats and Long Term Complications

I've been doing the low(ish) carb thing and have got my HB1AC down from 8.1 in July 08 to 6.0 in December 2008 and am hoping for anything below a 6 next week at annual review. It's been really hard to maintain the low carb diet, so I give myself occasional treats, say, once a month, of a slice of cake or pizza. Just how damaging are occasional treats that send readings through the roof? Is it ok to do it every so often as a safety valve to keep the diet on track, or is it still storing up trouble in the long run as regards diabetic complications?

Thank you
Mimi

If I didn't have insulin, I'd certainly be a lot more careful about what I eat, as there would be little else with which to manage blood sugars. Long term complications are more common in those who have had persistently higher blood sugar levels, or where control has generally been erratic over a long period of time i.e. repeated large swings from low to high and back again. But the odd transgression into the danger zone (+7 mmol/l) here and there has to be worth it?

Thank you both for that.

I had a look at the thread you recommended Sue - some differences of opinion there. I guess I'm lucky to be in a position where I can make a difference to the levels at all (i.e. no insulin etc.) so should just get on with doing my best. I guess I was looking for a get-out clause but there isn't one really.....

Mimi.
