Reactive Hypoglycaemia Diagnosis

Hello

I’ve been recently diagnosed with reactive hypoglycaemia and I’m due to start metformin right away.

However, I’ve just checked my blood sugars two hours after my evening meal and they’re 8.9! My understanding is that this is raised for someone with RH? I’m year to see the diabetic nurse for them to tell me if I have diabetes (I’ve had gestational diabetes twice in the last two years) along with the RH. To me this is a bit weird, my only symptom with this is a slight headache and that’s it.

Any advice or opinions welcome.

Hi

I don't have RH so can't be of much use, but @Lamont D may be much wiser then I am.

Either way, welcome to the forum

Where however, sadly though we have been sent this way in our journey, there is a wealth of advice & friendly support.

Sure to be someone along soon offering some assistance.

Take care.

If the 8.9 was higher than you would expect for the meal you had, did you confirm it by doing another test?
Sometimes our meters can give wildly inaccurate results. What was your meal, how many carbs?

Hi, first of all a couple of questions.
What tests have you had?
What did you eat to get the reading?
What is your fasting and hba1c levels?

8.9 isn't unusual, depending on the amount of carbs you had.
Certain carbs are likely to put me in double figures mmols from a fasting levels of between 4-6 mmols.
When testing, you need to test pre meal and either or both, one, two and three or four hours after.
To monitor the spike and see the hypo.
RH is the reaction of too much insulin after a spike of too much glucose after carbs or sugars.
RH is usually a non diabetic condition, but because of wrong dietary information or wrong treatment, T2 could be seen as an outcome for some if they are unaware of the reasons why your body reacts to food.
RH means you are carbs intolerant. I have been lactose intolerant all my life.
Intolerance means avoidance of these foods. Which I'm certain your diabetic nurse will not agree with.
If you haven't already you should insist on getting a referral to a specialist endocrinologist, who has experience in hypoglycaemia.
Finally, my endocrinologist took me off metformin straight away, as it is not necessary, as dietary adjustments will be better in the long term.

Keep asking, start a good diary and keep testing.

Have a read of our RH forums, plenty of knowledge and experience.
Best wishes.
