I asked my consultant about this after I read this soon after my first OGTT.
He said, that it wouldn't compromise the test, maybe he doesn't know, but I've always fasted and never upped my carbs! In fact my endocrinologist insisted I stay on very low carbs!
Omg @Linagirl i should have remembered this days ago! I am so sorry.
Because when we eat low carb, our body adjusts, and reduces the number of enzymes we produce, we are less able to cope with carbs - because we have fewer enzymes.
And it takes a few days of normal carb eating, to 'wake the enzymes up'. It is known as the last meal effect - where our body habitually expects to cope with what we had over the last few days.
So, you will be going into your OGTT with downgraded enzymes - assuming you have been low carbing over the last few days?
Going into an OGTT with downgraded enzymes will result in delayed insulin release.
But i don't know how this will affect an RHer.
Low carbers are advised to eat normal levels of carbs (whatever they are!) for several days before the test. But most medical professionals don't know this - and probably wouldn't know their patients are low carbing anyway.
I am sorry, but i didn't remember this early enough to tell you.
I suppose now you face the choice: cancel tomorrow, reschedule and eat carbs for a week beforehand, or go through with it, in the knowledge that your insulin response will be that of a LC RHer - but i honestly don't know what that effect will be.
I think both arguments are perfectly valid.
Either eat LC as normal (as you intend to do for the rest of your life) and find out how you react to an ogtt under those circs,
Or
Eat carbs like everyone else, and produce a result that your medical professional can interpret according to their usual standard.
The important thing is to know that there are 2 options and make a conscious choice.
Thanks Brun don't worry I'll take my chances and see what happens I just hope I get thru it ok. Just scared of collapsing again like I did in the restaurant
More than anything x
I'm a little anxious about the diagnosis as I don't believe I am diabetic and I don't want to try to treat me as such and not listen to me. I am going to suggest nicely to the health care assistant that they take insulin as well as glucose tests so they can see what is going on. My biggest fear is the blood pressure drop I seem
To suffer when my blood sugar drops x
Well I've had my fasting blood done and had the horrid drink (having not had sugar for so long it was yuck) now
To see what happens next. I asked the health care assistant and she had no idea about insulin and could only do as she was told. They are also only going to take my blood once after two hours. I've bought my monitor with me so I will
Do it very half An hour. I really can't see the point of this test it's useless.
Started dropping now 14.7 at 1.5 hours sorry Brun only just seen your message.
Not sure how quickly it will drop but I'll do it in 15 mins. Interestingly my cheek has started to go numb already and I'm at 14.7 so I'm symptomatic during the drop not as a result of my bg.
If you have a very low carb meal, just to tie you over, then increase your food in a couple of hours after that, you shouldn't crash too hard, but keep it low carb, no carbs!I'm hungry but don't want to push levels back up x
