Diagnosed T1 after admitted to hospital in March. Saw GP yesturday who told me I'm t2. No test - just said can tell from his experience that I'm type 2! He didn't seem worried but I know treatment and regime can be different. Blood pretty stable: 4-7, ketones: low - 0.2. Have not been told to monitor anything else. Told how to react if blood count goes lower or if higher to ring DN for advice. Diabetes Hospital appt in Dec. DN not available - left message to ring me but told don't know when she'll be back. GPs DN won't deal with me until hospital put everything on place - stated there to maintain what hospital set in place! Really confused now! How can GP diagnose as t2 when he's only met me once? GP I really trusted & could talk to recently left - due GPS booking system have to see any GP & no continuity!

That's all rather unhelpful. I would be soooooo annoyed.

I would say that whilst your care is being managed by the hospital (and you, obviously!), I would treat your GP's words as his opinion, and that only. Everyone has an opinion, but provided he is not changing any of your medication, prescriptions or treatment plans, I'd try to park his words in the area of my brain reserved for white noise. I know that's not easy in the immediacy of his statements.

It's important you mention it to the hospital when you are next there, or when you can contact them, but I would say his opinion is secondary to the specialists' opinions. Your bloods are great, so concentrate on the positives. That's what you need to build and boost your confidence.

Hmmm, sounds like an age related thing - you know, the one where people look at you and if you are over say, about 30, they think "Type 2" No one of course, can develop Type 1 over the age of 18, can they ??

Which is absolute nuts, people can and do, and even "Juvenile Diabetics" are not Peter Pan :banghead:

To the point, has "Doctor Psychic " suggested you stop insulin, or restricted your test strips ?

No didn't stop anything - just stated he knew I was type 2 from experience!

I would contact hospital and express your concern. Perhaps they will contact your surgery on your behalf in writing (don't forget to ask for a copy of the letter). I know my consultant did when I was told I didn't need the eye test I was entitled to.

Just make sure that when you have seen the clinic, and been confirmed as type1, you go back and rub that doctors nose in it.

Armed with empirical proof in the form of test results.

And maybe ask that your medical notes be purged of any speculation/opinion that may confuse a doctor or nurse. Would be dreadful his speculation were to impact on future treatment!

Hi. You have my sympathy in dealing with an apparently rather silly GP. The reality is that saying you are a T2 is purely guesswork unless you are really obese when it becomes highly likely. Many GPs don't understand Late onset T1. I suspect you will get better treatment at the hospital but if you are not overweight then do ask for GAD and c-peptide tests if they aren't offered and they guess you are T2. My first db GP diagnosed me as T2 with a urine stick and I was thin as a stick and had lost weight just before diagnosis (classic LADA stuff). Several years later and failing to respond to tablets my 2nd db GP said I wasn't T1 therefore I was T2 not having done any tests and still stick thin. So, don't trust the GPs guesswork and other LADAs on the forum will testify to similar experiences. In some ways the treatment regimes are similar but several tablets may be needed initially if T1 and, I'm afraid, insulin may be needed eventually but to be honest it's not a real problem these days.
