Really,Really Fed Up!!

Hi,
My BS has been out of control for some time now and my diabtetic meds are 1gm x 2 daily of glucophage, 26 units of Lantus and was put on 100mg of Januvia on 31st December.

I phoned DNS as requested and told her my BS readings are no different eg 20+ 2hrs after meals and averaging 14 pre food and around 12.5 fasting. The DNS said she had spoken to the consultant and he would not consider changing or altering meds until I had been on Januvia for 8 weeks as it takes that long to work in the system!! Is that True??

I am just so fed up that my Diabetes appears to get worse with meds rather than improve!! I just do not understand what is happening. I am so down at the moment and the thought of being washed out and continually tired (and bad tempered!) for at least the next 7 weeks, I find horrifying.

Sorry Mervyn, I can't comment on the medication as I don't know - but are there changes you could make to your diet to get your BG under control? What sort of diet are you on?

Hi,
For breakfast I have either porridge or bran flakes and once a week I have 2 slices of toast and maybe one day of the weekend bacon & egg.

Lunch is either cheese & crackers or sardines/pilchards and an egg on somedays. For dinner it changes for instance smoked haddock, or sausages or omellette but I always have plenty of veg. I don't have supper.

No horrendous carb levels then. I think you need some advice from other Lantus/Januvia users on here. I'm sure they'll be along soon. Good luck!

I tried porridge at the weekend. Nearly spiked my ears off. First time above 9 mmol/l since diagnosis.

Hi Mervyn. My GP told me Januvia would take 6 months to have any effect; well it took 2 days so much for that guidance. It has helped keep my spikes below 10. I guess you need to give Januvia a bit more time. It affects people in different ways. It works by supressing an enzyme that in turn switches off insulin production so depending on what is causing your DB it may or may not have much effect. I guess ultimately your insulin may need adjustment?

Hi Mervyn.
I was on januvia prior to using levemir insulin, was taken OFF januvia as it was incompatible with levemir insulin.
The DN told me it would take up to 3 months for the januvia to get into my system properly and do its job! Sadly it didnt work for me in terms of reduceing my BG levels. [was taking januvia combined with gliclazide at the time]
Had no problems being on the januvia [ no side effects etc] it just made a tiny dent in my high BG readings initially then I went 'whooop' high again, so it was decided to take me off tablet meds and try with levemir insulin instead.
Also with the porridge being mentioned I CANT tollerate this at all, it makes my BG levels stick to the ceiling! Plus its like cement in my digestive system both blows and bungs me up!
It can be hard going through the rough times mervyn, being so drained and bad tempered I know but all it does take is the RIGHT meds combo JUST for you and you will start to improve and feel tons brighter and better.
All we can do is continue to support you and be there for you, we do know and understand what it really can be like.
Much love and thoughts.

Hi,
Anna and thank you for your kind words. It does seem that I will have to wait at least another 7 weeks or so. I feel that a mixed insulin would be better for me but will just have to wait and see.

It would be nice if the combination I am on works as one injection a day is better than two  I just feel that my diabetes seems to be worsening even though I understand that it is progressive.

Once again thatnks!

Januvia worked very well for me - but I knew for certain I was spiking when my levels went lowish.

At the time I was taking 3x2 mg of glimepiride and had to stop it pretty quickly as the two drugs together caused daily hypos. At the time I began it I also slightly increased my daily exercise and reduced my carb intake. I noticed a difference in my levels within a week. Maybe you need to do somehing similar to kickstart it?
