hello, i am very new to using the pc, so please forgive me if i make mistakes. I saw my GP yesterday who said he would be very surprised if i didn't have diabetes. i am a 42 year old female, in the last 10 days i have had dry mouth, terrible thrist, dry skin and tiredness. A couple of days ago my vision started to go blurry. I already wear glasses as i am very short-sighted, so my sight is very precious to me. i was sent to the hospital for a blood test and was told the results will be back within a week. i asked my GP if i do have diabetes, will my sight return to "normal" with treatment? he said to wait and see what the results are. i spoke with my optician who said he can't test my vision until he has the test results. i am in limbo and very worried my eyesight will be damaged. Can anyone reassure me things will settle with treatment? And also, what should i be doing while awaiting results regarding diet? do i eat normally? or should i cut out sugar? I apologise for sounding stupid asking this, but i do not know anything about diabetes. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hi tammyann.
This must be a very difficult time for you and we can all sympathise as we have all been there.
With regard to your eyesight, this should settle once the blood sugars are under control. The time it takes does vary but it doesn't take too long.
Have a good read around the forum as to what you should be eating. There are various strategies that people use. Overall you need to cut back on the amount of carbohydrates you eat at mealtimes. Try and cut back on sugars as well.
Any questions come back and ask. We are all here to help each other.
Hope this helps
Regards, Catherine.

Hello Tammyann,

You can start dieting for diabetes now, & it can only benefit your health, even if it turns out that you haven't got it. Cut sugar completely & cut carbohydrates to about 1/3. Increase protein & fruit & veg to compensate.

Many have reported blurry eyes as a reason for seeking advice, & reduced blood sugar has cleared that problem in a short time. I didn't - my eyes have been the same prescription (-8) for 15 years.

Stay around & ask your questions.

Hi,

this will be a confusing time for you and so many questions to ask :?: . no question is to silly :!: .Places like this are a good start to obtain infomation. However visit http://www.diabetes.org.uk everything you need to know will be there. That is where i was told to go by my diabetic doctor. Like you i knew very little about diabetes. However do not worry yourself. Minor changes to your life style is all is needed. No special foods or drinks are needed. Just a good low fat, low salt, low suger diat, a heathy diat is what is needed. Doctors will look after medication. Keep an eye on your sugers using a home meter ask the Dr they may suply you one. Follow the rules and you can live a normal life. I have looked around this site and there is good solid advice on it. Please let us know what your results are and what info the doc tells you. Good luck and all the best. :)

P.S sorry about the spelling this is due to an unrelated illness (stroke)

hi tammyann, i too am fairly new to this diabetes thing. i look after my mum who is type 2 with insulin. she was initially told by the nhs docs to eat a high carb low fat diet! she has never been well since! however since finding this foram and putting my mum on a low carb diet the results have been amazing! she feels better and her bg levels are coming down and her eyesight is improving ( her sight went blurry also). so if i have learned anything so far that i could pass on is- low carbs and stick with this foram because the info is invaluable! good luck!
p.xx
