Make sure to drink plenty of water. Dehydration can lead to elevated blood glucose levels.

Diet is basically non existent although I don’t eat much but maybe pick more. Breakfast was a yoghurt and then at 1200 on the way home had a McDonald kids meal of 4 chicken nuggets and some fries. Haven’t eaten since. Dinner tonight will be a cheese and ham turkey burger and mash. I’ve really lost my way. Can’t get in to any routine as I work a 2 early, 2 late then 2 off rotating shift pattern.

Perhaps look at writing out a 6 day diet plan and shopping list with different things depending on your shift for the day. Planning your meals would help you to get back into a routine.

Will try and drink more. Not good with naturally just drinking it when thirsty. Blood sugar first thing this morning was 14.6 and after a coffee and just a muller fruit corner it’s 18.2. Rang doctor to speak with diabetic nurse and told she left over a month ago!!! But seeing new nurse tomorrow morning. Been reading other forums and not a lot of people happy with gliclazide. I’m taking this along with metformin. Always get stomach cramps then needing to find a loo so it restricts me to what I can do. I’m worried now that my biliary sepsis earlier this year may have affected my pancreas so will discuss tomorrow. Was always around 10.5-11.0 in sugar levels so a little worried which probably doesn’t help. In the meantime does anyone know where I can get a custom made diet sheet for someone who doesn’t eat eggs or any fish and doesn’t drink milk although can have it mixed in oats.

Update. Went to see my new diabetic nurse yesterday. What a waste of time. Even asked for her to check my blood sugar level after fasting and she didn’t want to... said doctor would probably want to check hb1c ! Also mentioned a tablet Dapa something I was asked to try and told her that I had already spoken to the last nurse and it didn’t agree and had given me cystitis which apparently is a side effect. She then said that my last blood results showed sugar levels elevated for last 12 months average 10.5-11!! So why didn’t they do anything. She has now made an appointment for me to see the doctor later today who may review my medication. Also I’ve lost 4lb in about 2 weeks. Still trying to drink more water but eating oats for breakfast now but not much appetite at the moment. I’m on metformin SR 500mg twice a day but gliclazide twice a day Anyone on good medication that has reduced their levels?

Got to see GP yesterday who isn’t actually a diabetic specialist although the other GP in the practice is!!! He has increased my Gliclazide to 200mg a day.
120g in the morning with breakfast and 80g at evening meal time plus I already take 500mg of metformim sr twice a day and I take amlopidine as well. Does anyone else take this amount of Gliclazide as he mentions the risk of hypoglycaemia which worries me. Going back to see other GP in a week. Also have a long flight I’m under 3 weeks so I’m scared about falling ill.

Sorry I meant I take 25mg of Alogliptin as well. So I have 3 diabetic tablets. He suggested I took an extra metformin but told him I get chronic diarrhoea but then I can do anyway so maybe it is a better option tha more Gliclazide. Any thoughts??

My thoughts are your levels should not be anywhere near as high as they are with all that medication.
Has your doctor done the Type 1 tests? Has he considered you may be a late onset T1? That you just do not produce enough insulin yourself - that no matter how many extra tablets he gives you, things won't change?
I would be pushing for a C-Peptide and a GAD test to see if T1 is a possibility.

The only other possibility is your diet and the amount of carbohydrates you consume.

I second this. It's scandalous how many GPs believe T1 doesn't happen to adults.

Gliclacide is supposed to increase insulin production - if your pancreas is pooped it can't make any more. Equally, Metformin lowers insulin resistance, if you have 'normal' insulin sensitivity it's not going to help significantly.

Reading between the lines of your posts it seems you're eating very few carbs and despite the medication glucose levels are rising quite rapidly and you're starting to lose weight. These are strong indicators to suspect T1 so push your GP for tests or a referral to an endocrinologist ASAP. If they resist, ask them the implications of ignoring T1 and do they want to take responsibility?

BTW, I would suggest checking for ketones too with such high levels.

Good luck.

Thank you for you your response. GP did a urine test yesterday. No ketones present only glucose. My levels have only escalated since last test in July and it was 10.5 but they didn’t seem too worried then. However last Feb I had biliary sepsis and pancreatitis following a stuck gallstone in bile duct 6 years after gallbladder removal so I’m wondering if this haas affected my levels or if my pancreas is suffering. Anyway, I’ll speak to the other GP next week about T1 test etc.

When I was diagnosed las june, I was desperate to get my levels down, by testing I found Shredded wheat, weetabix and porrige all raised my BG to unacceptable levels also semi skimmed milk. I changed them for a full fat youghurt and added my own berries, not only did my BG come down but so did my blood pressure. I do not do low fat now as that means the product is usually loaded with sugar just to taste edible. Best of luck with your Journey and also keep away from bread until the figures come down. Remeber though these are my no no foods yours could be different

Also, If you can afford it, 50 quid a fortnight is almost criminall, a freestlye Libre is great. I've just finished a 2 week try out and seeing how BG changes by the hour really helped me see what foods were doing what. Try and get your doctor to prescribe it, mine was very impressed but said he couldn't prescribe it because my BG was under control, Doh !! it's under control because of the libre

Just seen one of your old posts about possible illnesses could cause raised BG. I’m suffering with a really bad cough and cold symptoms even after a flu jab in October. Also stressed out with mother in law in hospital with lymphoma and chronic COPD.. I have a part time job as well that I could really do without at the moment. Historically my BG was down to 8.7 from 10.5-11.0 though only on a 6 month check as I haven’t been self testing very often. Just clinging to any reason why my BG should increase so dramatically.

A cough and cold virus won't be helping, and nor will continued stress. You still need to speak to your GP and push for the T1 tests. Don't let him fob you off - many GPs do try.
