Hi everybody. I have been following the forum since diagnosis with Type 2 a couple of weeks ago. It seems like a great place with good people! I live in Sydney but am an ex-pat from London. I think I'm still in a bit of shock and denial, but have been on a low-carb diet since diagnosis. My doctor put me on 500mg of Metformin a day with instructions to test blood just before and 2hrs after dinner. My numbers have been consistently in the 5.0-6.0 mmol (with a couple of 4's) region after testing for two weeks. Is this correct? My waking fasting is around 5.5-6.0 most days. Is it too early to think that my Dr may have been hasty in diagnosing me or am I just being optimistic? Thanks for letting me in!

Did he give you your hba1c number?

Testing should be done before and after every meal. Have you read the link in my signature. You're right, this is a fab place.

I think he did, but I was in a state of complete shock and didn't really take it in. I'm going in this week to discuss the BGL readings that I've been taking over the last two weeks so will ask him what my; 1. Fasting BGL 2. OGTT BGL and 3. HbA1c are. Does that seem right? Thanks, Mark

It sounds as though you are doing ok. Fasting bg can be the last number to come down. Ignore it for now it is influenced by the dawn phenomenon.

If you have weight to lose, that will help enormously.

Thanks. I do have about 15kg to lose. The Type 2 diagnosis is a good incentive.

I wish all doctors in the UK took such a good approach.

I suspect, from the above, that your diagnosis was sound but double check at your upcoming review and let us know what the numbers were.

If you have had an OGTT then it looks as though your doctor is very much on the ball and I would expect that this formed part of the diagnosis.

You seem to be both sensible and doing well.
The numbers look good but then low carbing does that for you.
People on this forum, though 100% diabetic, have managed to maintain normal BG levels through low carbohydrate or keto diets.

So hitting non-diabetic numbers almost straight away is a sign that you are doing exactly the right thing, but also carries the warning that if you think you are cured or the diagnosis was a mistake then you could get yourself into trouble again.

Welcome to the forum.

Speaking as someone who had an early turnaround you are doing great.
Everyone is different & finding what works for you is purely individual.
You could have been diagnosed just at the tipping point & with 15kg to lose you have even greater wiggle room.
Enjoy your newly acquired healthy lifestyle & keep an eye on those carbs.

Hi. If you sign-up to your surgeries online system you will be able to see test results yourself if you ask for that level of access

Thank you for the very concise and detailed reply. I'll be sure to get a proper check over. I guess I'm just trying to pretend that I might not have T2! Could get lucky maybe?

My memories of the NHS are pretty good. I didn't have to pay $75 every time I went to the doctor when I lived in London!
