Recommended health snacks for diabetics

Re: Recommended health snacks for diabetics

Chicken thighs/legs pre cooked from the supermarket. Must have the bones in to show they are not pre digested.
Chicken breast with coleslaw on if you don't mind cooking the chicken.
Cumberland sausages seem safer than most. I cook them all and freeze them and microwave the result if I get hungry.
Roasted salted peanuts but not the whole packet.
Celery wrapped in a slice of ham. You can add coleslaw but it drips.
Charlotte potatoes and salad. For some reason these potatoes do not affect my blood sugar.

Re: Recommended health snacks for diabetics

I have a chunk of cheese, a handful of peanuts, some cocktail sausages (5 is about 8g carb), carrot sticks

For sweet cravings I've started buying family packs of giant buttons. After my lunch I take one (counter/button/minstrel/mini egg/other chocolate of your choice) and suck it. That satisfies me enough. I'm type 1 and even before diagnosis I had very good self control. I know that wouldn't work for everyone, but I find that it's better to have a little when the craving starts than to leave it until I'm desperate because then I go crazy and eat half the bag!

Re: Recommended health snacks for diabetics

Kiddies bags of carrots,celery,melon/grapes [2 for a £1 from morrisons] boiled egg [cut in half]
handful of almonds, lettuce parcels with little gem lettuce leaves.

Lettuce parcels - just chuck any salady favourites into these, roll them up and enjoy
The list is great with these , grated/sliced cheese, wafer thin ham/chicken, boiled egg, celery, carrot,
tomatoes,cucumber,baby beetroot,minted peas,feta cheese etc...

You can add in your own favourite dressing if you wish.
Pop on a small plate [loooks more this way] much on them and really easy to rustle up too .

Hope this suggestion can help . :)

Re: Recommended health snacks for diabetics

Hi fergus .

I know what you mean and imply with the grapes thing . :)

In the kiddies bag's of mixed tiny melon pieces n grapes ,
there is always only about 4 or 5 grapes [less than a handful really ]
in these so this is okay for me .
They are usually only the red grapes too .

It just gives me a little taste of them and as there is so 'few' of them
its not causing a real peak or spike on my BG levels.

Hey all, can anyone recommend healthy snacks to help with cravings?

Hi Dandie and welcome to the forum.

I am surprised every one has offered you their take on what is the best snacks when you say it is to help with "cravings" and not hunger!!

If you are not hungry but just want to feed a craving I would suggest you try to identify what is causing the craving and deal with that, could it be stress of some sort? Better to deal with the stress than end end up with a weight problem.

Eat when you are "hungry" and not when you are craving food. The next time you want a snack ask yourself if you are really hungry or not, try drinking a glass of water before you reach for a snack, hunger and thirst are almost identical and often a glass of water will cure the craving for a snack.

9bars. They're awesome! About 12g of carbs a bar. Pumpkin seed one is my fave :D
