Red wine and lower blood sugar

Would love the forums thoughts on using 1 glass of red wine with a main meal as a means to reduce blood sugar levels.

I am type 2, 500mg metformin a day. I have noticed my blood sugar levels can be kept low with a glass of red wine. I eat well but the red wine makes a big difference.

I have read that red wine can stop the liver from turning protein into glucose. If that is true and it appears to be according to my very unscientific tests, then what are the down sides to 1 glass of red with my main meal.

I know the wine industry would recommend it but what about everyone else ???

There are quite afew topics on here about alcohol and BG's.

It does bring readings down, a glass of red wine an evening would be considered by many as a 'healthy' way to drink (if such a thing exists). The problem comes when 1 glass leads to 2 etc etc.

If I have a wine I do use that as a reason to have some extra carbs with my meal. I think making up my porridge with red wine may have been a step too far :lol: :lol:

None whatsoever! I find a bottle works even better! No, seriously, drinking in moderation is fine for a diabetic as with any non-diabetic. It does also have the extra benefit of lowering Bgs. The liver has a "priority" system which means that it finds it difficult to process carbs into glucose while it is first concentrating on getting rid of toxins, which is what it classes alcohol as. There is a scientific name for this which an endocrinologist told me, but i can't remember it.

Only fasting triglyceride concentration was significantly reduced when comparing 0 and 15 g/d of alcohol (7.8%; P = .03), and no difference was found between consumption of 15 and 30 g/d of alcohol; however, there was a significant linear trend (P = .001). Fasting glucose concentrations were not different across treatments.

Conclusions Consumption of 30 g/d of alcohol (2 drinks per day) has beneficial effects on insulin and triglyceride concentrations and insulin sensitivity

Well, confession is meant to be good for the soul. Not sure about the diabetes.
As long as your stress levels are helped by unburdening :D

! glass would be fine and within the RDA, I only indulge on a weekend and have to say it has a negligible effect on my bg.
 
I am so excited by this as I love red wine! on a more serious note , I believe it an reduce blood sugar in the long term but doesn't the alcohol ferment in your digestive system and put the sugar back up later the next morning? Fine if you've had plenty of fibre but usually a glass of vino in my case is accompanied by a curry! also does anyone know if this can lower cholesterol to the extent that we can come off simvastatin?

For those of us who suffer from erectile dysfunction, I have paid £10 a tablet for the likes of Cialis and Levitra which work ok, although they increase stamina a little too, you still get tired unless you pace yourself. I've found the same effect can be achieved with a rogan josh and a spicy red wine. I am being serious here: it works for me, or a chilli beef with rice and the wine. Has to be a wine that says it contains spices on the label though and only one glass, and not the whole takeaway of a curry. Share it with your other half otherwise you'll just get drowsy and fall asleep! Anyone else tried this?
