After getting a big water bill 3 or 4 months ago I decided to have a water meter fitted. This was done several weeks ago and I got my first metered bill last week. It said I was £325 in credit, and that was after they had deducted what I owed them for the water I had used. A friend said I should phone them and ask for the sum to be refunded. I did this and they are sending me a cheque for the full amount. WOW! Christmas has come early!
The money will go towards a second-hand vehicle in a few weeks when my Saxo fails the MOT. :(

A Saxo still on the road??

Much of my Saxo is part of the road, A bit here, a bit there.

Citroen Saxo. RIP (rust in pieces)

Unfortunately I know plenty of people who still drive Saxos

I have a house where their isnt room to put a water meter in the pipework.. And its shared water into house. So the meter had to be fixed in a clear10" gap in pipework somewhere around the stopcock. It would have to be us that moves the stopcock etc..
However, result from being told that wecant have a meter and from us using water sparingly "oh yes, i only have 1 shower a week, 1 washload, no hosepipe (tongue in cheek)" ... Is that our monthly water bill has dropped from £50 to £17 a month!! Result!!

When I moved into my 1 bedroom flat I was paying £30 odd per month.

My monthly direct debit is now £10 per month.

Anyone living alone would probably benefit from having a water meter fitted.....

I used to work for a water company and our general rule was: if there are less or equal amount of people as there is bedrooms in a property you will benefit for a meter.
Like I say general!
Most companies have some switch back guarantee so you can try being on a meter for a while and then go back to unmeasured if metered is more expensive. I think you can normally only switch once though then you would have to stay on a meter.

Looked at a water meter some years ago after a friend at work (who lived on his own) saved a fortune on his bills, after a bit of research it seems that for families you could end up paying twice as much depending on the amount of water you use, back then my kids were little and would often leave the tap running so decided against it.....

You don't get nothin' for nothin'

The water companies aren't going to install water meters for the benifit of thier customers or the environment. They will install them to make sure they can screw every last drop of our vitals from us. But with me they wont. Single man, no washing machine or dishwasher, never water the garden or wash my vehicles. Showers not baths, never have visitors. (last ones 3 years ago).

Just call me Mr. Tightwad Miseryguts. (with a refund on the way)

We have a 5 bedroom property, only two of us living there and one of us is away working 4 days a week. Had a water meter fitted in 2011 on the insistence of the water company, bad move on their part, they had to give us close to £500 as a refund and since then the bills are around 80% lower - wish we'd had one fitted when we bought the place 9 years ago.

That's very true Sir and there's nothing 'Mr. Tightwad Miseryguts' about it. I changed my boiler cover over last week from British Gas to another provider and saved £80 a year, also got a good deal out of Sky after pleading poverty and they've cut my bill by a third

ahh, I used to own a Saxo. In fact i also had 2 models of its forerunner the AX

If you're getting nostalgic, mine will be available in a week or so. Bring dustpan and brush.

Re: Refund from water company. Update.

I received a cheque from the water company yesterday and paid it in today. £325.45 in MY account thank you very much.

I am now in a quandry about my poor Saxo. I feel that I owe it a chance with an MOT, just to see how much it will cost to repair. One way of looking at it is that whatever the MOT costs I will get scrap value for the car, so the MOT costs me nothing. Or, I scrap it and pocket the scrap value. As I say, I feel that I owe the poor thing a fighting chance. It's a 1.5L diesel and is doing over 60 mpg around town. It will be a hard act to follow.
