I remember the SlimFast shakes. Quite nice as a thick milkshake, but couldn't stick to them for more than a couple of weeks.A set of shakes to help replace meals...mmhh.

I tried it about 40 years ago - it was VLC and I only lost 7lb in 6 weeks! Unfortunately it also made me very ill as my metabolism slowed down and sent my body into ‘starvation mode’.I think this will be the Cambridge or Newcastle diets. A woman who lives near me was put on this plan ( I think her problem was obesity only) and she did lose weight rapidly. As far as I know the meal replacements were exactly the same as it would be if buying the product. The only difference was she was monitored by her GP.
I did consider this route but my research revealed many with diabetes were questioning the sugar content of the bars and drinks. I decided not to try this route so perhaps investigate the actual products as to suitability.
There are quite a few FB groups that are for users of these products. If you search for VLCD ( very low calorie diets) you will find a few .

I felt so ill and when I saw my GP he told me to go home and have a good meal and eat more calories per day. He also referred me to an endocrinologist who told me that I was one of his few patients who could honestly blame their weight on their metabolism and told me to eat healthily but normally as too few calories will do me more harm than good.I too went on a very low 800 cal a day diet when I was first diagnosed but mine is a bit of a cautionary tale. I didn't use shakes just adjusted what I was eating. I was, having things like veggie smoothies, soups, cottage cheese, tuna salads etc. I was also exercising regularly using an air walker. Things went well until they didn't! One day my blood pressure went sky high and my heart was thudding. so I had to take an emergency trip to the GP. I saw the practice nurse initially, when she saw my blood pressure went straight out and called the doctor in. Doc reckoned my body had gone into starvation mode. He told me I was using about 300 cals doing the exercises so probably only had around 500 cals available to sustain me. He advised against doing exercises on such a low calorie diet. Doc said I could continue the diet but suggested I lift the calories to 1000 a day. I had already completed 8 weeks of the VLC so chose to swap onto a low carb eating plan which turned out to be more sustainable for me. I was left with an ectopic heartbeat which does me no harm, but it is pointed out to me every time I have my feet checked by the "foot nurse".
