Removing cannula??

Hi,

I'm on day 3 and things are going ok but today I need to change my infusion set and reservoir.

I've had the training on how to disconnect the infusion set and fill the reservoir etc etc but how do I actually take the cannula out of my stomach - I asked my DSN and she said it's really easy, you just pull it out and I didn't think much more of it but now I come to do it and I don't know if i should just tug on the plastic bit or if I have to loosen the sticky bit first??

I know I should just give it a go but my stupid fear of cannula's makes me feel faint even when I just think about it - I really don't want to have to fiddle with it too much :(

I am using the paradigm veo and quickset...any tips would be much appreciated.

Hi,

I use quickset, just unstick a bit of the sticky bit enough to get a good grab on it. Then pull hard like your raking off a plaster. The quicker, the less pain, simples :)

Good luck.

On first changeover, give yourselve loads of time, and do not rush. It may take an hour whlst doing the first changeover, but by the time you do the 3rd it will be less than 3 or 4 minutes.

There are techniques and sprays etc that can be used to help loosen the glue from the sets to make it easier. I use 'lift off' spray and it makes removal of cannulas a lot easier,

hi
dylan too is on the veo with quickset and i too peelabit back then pull it and dylan never complains it hurts and hes 8 so he would def say if it did believe me
good luck with it

We used Lift-Plus spray to loosen the sticky plaster bit but Jess complained that the spray was cold. We now use wipes which the pump co supplied to us called Uni-Solve and the sticky plaster bit comes off really easily with that and Jess prefers it to the spray. Once the sticky plaster bit is loosened then we simply pull it and the cannula off/out.

We also use wipes that we get on prescription. Just wipe them around the plaster untill it starts to loosen and then lift all around the edge and it almost falls out. Lily says it burns but I think that she confuses it with being cold. We still have a sticky residue left that takes some shifting though.

Thank you all so much for your advice! I'd already sent sent for some samples of the spray and wipes after reading some of these posts before i got my pump so I will try those...I just need to do it and stop worrying!

I was fine! It's all done although it did take me about 45mins to get it all sorted. I think it is just that 1st time thing that is really scary...I won't have to worry for future changes now :D

Those wipes are great too - i'm going to try and get some on prescription.

Thanks again everyone x

Interesting to hear about the wipes!

I just use a cotton bud dipped in baby oil to soak the sticky bit off. Then I just peel the set off. Baby oil works a treat for me

my boy just peels it off like an old plaster.
we use the wipes to clean up sticky residue, but it stings if used on the area that the old canulla just come off, so leave it till next day.
