Hi there,

Can fresh milk be replaced with any other kind of milk? Eg, soy milk or almond milk?

Also, I really miss eating sweet foods. Was wondering what you guys do when you find you miss that sugary taste? Eg, do you eat fruit? Or sugar free candy?

Apologies if these are weird questions.

Still new to this and figuring things out.

Thanks in advance :)

I never had a sweet tooth.
Never really had or wanted sweet things .... till I got diabetes.
Strange I know.
I have plain full fat yoghurt with a tidge of honey in it and maybe some nuts and berries.
I've also started having a table spoon of rice vinegar a day which cuts out the sweet craving for me.
Lots of other health benefits too apparently and why I've started taking it.
Bit experimental at the moment.

You can use milk alternatives if you like the taste, most have fewer carbs than dairy milk. Or lactofree milk has almost half the carbs of ordinary milk but tastes the same, that's what I use :)
I have a very sweet tooth and find it best to refrain completely otherwise I get too tempted. But I do like a sugar free Werther's Original when I'm driving or walking the dog, both times that my mouth gets very dry for some reason!
I'm not eating fruit now (banana was my favourite!) but a lot of people here eat full fat greek yoghurt :yuck: with berries that seem to satisfy them :wacky:

I use Alpro unsweetened almond milk which is about as low carb as you're likely to get. I also like their hazelnut version but that is sweetened so I use it sparingly. I think they also make soy and coconut versions but you'll need to check if they're sweetened and/or what their carbs values are. You can also get lactose free milk - I think there was a mention of this on the forums some time back. Again check nutrition values on labels for carb content.

If you go low carb, you are may well get sugar cravings while your body's adjusting to its new sugar free regime, but these should pass. The best thing to do is try some fatty treats instead, e.g. thick cream and berries, a few nuts, a bit of cheese, spoonful of sugar free nut butter. Take care with fruit other than berries as some of it is full of sugars. If you choose to go the "sugar free" sweeties way, be careful as some of the sugar replacements/artificial sugars they use may apparently cause the "runs", so again check the labels and possibly do a bit of research into possible side effects of this type of ingredient.

Yes I am trying to eat less carbs and I've also cut down on any sweet things. So now everything I eat is either salty or sour. I so miss the sweet taste. Yesterday I couldn't stand it so I had some grapes and navel oranges. Then I couldn't bring myself to test my blood sugar after that.

I live in Singapore where milk alternatives are pretty pricey but I guess for the sake of my health, I should make a switch. Thanks for the tips everyone, I will look out for the milk alternatives at the supermarkets here.

Why not use double cream and water it. Stay away from soy/soya as they contain phytates blocking the uptake of minerals and also rich in omega 6 and have other effects that can be adverse.

I use almond milk unsweetened ...
And I buy 70% chocolate

If you bake you might like to try xylitiol as a sweetener ...have a Google
If you crave a desert , then there are lots to choose from ...if you want to try baking

I have a banana about twice a month ...

I think in Singapore you can get the unsweetened fresh soya milk ...
Also some of there canned drinks now have less sugar in them , like black jelly drink ...much lower sugar versions
I think you can get 70% chocolate bars as well ....

How can anyone live in Singapore and not eat the beautiful tropical fruit - those little pineapples are so good. Where I live in Australia, my mango tree was just dropping fruit everwhere so had to relent and eat (quite) a few!. I was a very big fruit eater and find if I don't get my sugar "shock" from fruit I go looking for biscuits etc. My diabetes experience is very limited - induced by steroids - so still finding my difficult way

Neale, for a moment there I thought you were referring to the infamous king of fruit in Singapore- the durian.

I'm not really a fan of pineapples actually though I know they are readily available here. I do like mango and jackfruit. I also love grapes and oranges. Come to think of it, since I stopped taking them, I have also started to crave apples and pears.

I do like blueberries though. I have been mixing greek yoghurt and blueberries. I don't particularly fancy the taste of Greek yoghurt but I'll take what I can get :)
