Reversing Diabetes diet

Hi all,
Has anyone tried and/or had any success with Dr Neal Barnard's 'Reverse Diabetes Diet? My partner is a Type 2 diet controlled diabetic and we have just bought Dr Barnard's book. It seems quite an extreme change to go vegan with no oils :shock: but if anyone has had success we are willing to try!

Hi Ll, no need to 'go vegan' unless you want to, just cut back on the carbs and reduce your food portions generally :thumbup:

Dr Barnard sounds like some sort of anti vivisection animal right nutter to me, but if he floats your boat go for it, personally I would last about 1/2 a day without meat :D
 
Well, let's put it this way: there are quite a few publicily-funded MDs out there who claim that their diet plan fixes diabetes. That means that either all but one are wrong, or that all diets work. Either way, I don't see any merit in following any given "extreme" diet.
 
There are a lot of diet books that have big claims.

Personally, my feeling is that if you, or in this case your husband, can stick closely to the diet it's likely to make inroads into better health.

The book that turned things round for me, personally, was Dr Bernstein's book. I don't follow it to the letter but my results have improved greatly in the 2 to 3 years since I read and took on the advice.

I think there are a lot of useful books which say largely similar things in different ways. My way of looking at it is if you can commit 80-90% (or so) to what the books ask, your health is likely to improve quite nicely.
 
The other book we are looking at is Dr Fedon Lindberg's 'The Greek Doctor's Diet' which seems less extreme in it's suggestions and at least allows room for chicken and fish!
