Re: I am doing food tech and need answers to these questions

Hi there im 27yrs old and have had type 1 diabetes for 17 yrs now, when i first found out i was brought diabetic foods and they are expensive but i found out people who buy diabetic foods are waisting there money as it dont tast the same and it has sum thing in the food which can cause direrria (sorry cant spell it) if you look on sugerfree food or diabetic food there is a warning on the packet, I have always eaten same as my family at meal times and just count the carberhydrates eg a small potatoe size of an egg is 10 carbs and i have 60 per meal a day,
I dont really eat sweet food as i havnt really for 17 yrs but now ansd again i fancy sumthing nice lol, hope this helps ur servey and good luck
if you want to hear any thing just ask i dont mind

Re: I am doing food tech and need answers to these questions

Hi, surprised by your questionaire. Been type-1 for 19 years, and realised a long time ago that most foods labled "diabetic" are usually a waste of money and unnesseccary. There are low sugar drinks even low sugar chocolate on the market but diabetics and "normal" people should really avoid high sugar foods anyway. I would prefer that some manufacturers would not add sugar, especially in savoury foods, seems pointless to me eg. tinned and pre-packaged meals.
Previous poster is correct, too much of the ingredients in "diabetic" foods, suchas diabeteic chocs make you go to the loo if u eat too much. I learnt my lesson when I made a cake from a "dabetetic cake mix" for my 19th birthday!
Less sugars in foods in general would be a more sensible idea, of course us type-1s DO need sugar occasionally, so I value mars bars, dairy milk and of course the indespensible lucozade!
I think special "diabetic" food labels are really not a good idea, just low sugar would be enough, we can just count the sugar and carbohydrate values on the packaging.
That's my view anyway, hope it helps.

Questionnaire

You should have tested your questionnaire out first because some of your questions are impossible to answer - hasn't your food tech or ICT teacher taught you how to design a questionnaire? I suggest going back to them and asking for help. I have tried to answer the questions I can, but the last two don't even state what you are asking!

Please tick ONE box of your choice for each question or answer within space given.

1) Do you have Type1 or Type2 Diabetes?

2) Do you feel there is enough variety of diabetic foods in supermarkets?

Yes No

3) Do you like Sweet or Savoury foods? Yes

4) What ONE food would you like to see made for diabetics?

nothing. I don't want food made specially for diabetics.

5) Do you feel the food available for diabetics at the minute is fairly priced?

Yes No Depends what food. Diabetics don't need different food from everyone else. Some food is fairly priced, some isn't!
6) How much would you be willing to pay?

For an individual sweet product? For an individual Savoury product?

£0.00-£0.50 £0.00-£0.50

£0.50-£1.00 £0.50-£1.00

£1.00-£1.50 £1.00-£1.50

£1.50-£2.00 £1.50-£2.00

£2.00-£2.50 £2.00-£2.50

£2.50-£3.00 £2.50-£3.00

This is an impossible question because it depends what food you are talking about, portion size, etc.

7) What TWO foods do you miss eating?
baked potatoes, cake

8) Do you have any other special diet? (Vegetarian, vegan etc) Please Specify below.

Lacto-ovo vegetarian

9) Tick TWO boxes from each of the subtitles below
What am I ticking them for?

Sweet products

Decorations?

Re: I am doing food tech and need answers to these questions

Sorry to say, I agree with the others. Type 1, do not buy special diabetic products, eat a wide variety of fresh foods.
One tip, after revising your questions, preview the questionnaire on a forum before you post. The formatting you used is not compatible... there are no boxes.

I seem to spend a lot of time telling students how to design questionnaires. I usually start off by telling them that it is a really difficult thing to do well, and if you don't do it well you won't get any meaningful results. Before you start you should go to the library and get a good book on questionnaire design (there are loads). This web site on Survey & Questionnaire Design will give you some ideas of the issues - but it barely scratches the surface. You then need to pilot it before you roll it out in a public place like this. You should also proof-read your copy before you publish it. None of us are immune from the occasional typo, but misspelling diabetes in the subject heading of a contribution to a diabetes forum is apt to annoy people.

However, I applaud your aims if not your methods - so, I shall do my best to be helpful.

Type 2

2) Do you feel there is enough variety of diabetic foods in supermarkets?
As mentioned by others, the concept of diabetic food is fundamentally flawed. I would like to see more low carb food, and more accessible nutritional labeling, though.

7fholmes said:
3) Do you like Sweet or Savoury foods?
Both - it depends upon the context

7fholmes said:
4) What ONE food would you like to see made for diabetics?
None - flawed concept

5a) Do you feel the food available for diabetics at the minute is fairly priced?
The foods currently marketed as diabetic are a cynical marketing rip-off preying upon people's ignorance.

7fholmes said:
5b) How much would you be willing to pay?
For an individual sweet product? For an individual Savoury product?
If you mean for "diabetic" products, then nothing - I wouldn't buy them. If you mean in general then it depends upon the product. Do I consider £10 to be a lot for a bottle of wine? It depends - £10 would be a bargain for a bottle of Châteauneuf-du-Pape but extortionate for a bottle of Piat D'or.

6) What TWO foods do you miss eating?
My policy is that I don't consider anything absolutely forbidden, but some things are relegated to rare treats. Two such treats are: rice and beer [beer is food! :wink: ]

7fholmes said:
7) Do you have any other special diet? (Vegetarian, vegan etc) Please Specify below.
No

If these are to be "diabetic" then I would suggest don't - the world has far too many sham diabetic products. If they are to be low carb, then that is a different matter - there are not enough low carb products easily available.

...
<snip>Loads of products</snip>
...

Depends upon context - low carb versions of any of these might be of interest - although a lot of them would be difficult to achieve (low carb baked potatoes anyone?!). I find it impossible to pull out individual items. Do they taste of cardboard, are they nice, am I looking for a main course, a desert or a snack?

Again, this depends upon context - sitting down in a restaurant generally hot food, at a party buffet generally cold. Also this is dependent upon the food - salads and curries are both good, - salads should be cold, curries should be hot. Ice cream should be cold, and I view baked alaska with deep suspicion :wink:

Sorry that my answers probably aren't what you are looking for - but garbage in, garbage out!

Your problem is with the design, not the formatting (i.e. you are asking the wrong questions and are making some questionable assumptions). If you are serious about this sort of market research, then read lots about both questionnaire design and diabetes and come back with a properly designed and tested questionnaire. I think that you would then find that the people on this forum would give you a lot of useful information.

Emma,

I pm'd you with my comments - much the same as others here.

Products I would like to see, & might buy are quiche, cheese cake, fruit cake. I'm not a food techie, but have worked in non-food chemistry for over 40 years. And I am a competent cook.

I suggest you think in terms of "Weight Watchers" as both slimmers & diabetics need low carbohydrate/fat/salt foods. Once you reduce sugar/fat/salt there may be problems with shelf life.

Avoiding all sweeteners would be appreciated;
reduce carbs by partially substituting e.g with powdered nuts, wheat & oat germ & bran;
aim at 10 g carb per portion;
no trans fats;
thicken with Vegegel;

hope that helps.
