Rough Tough Biker, Scared to death!

Hey Tigger I'm pretty new around here too and I can only echo what the others have said, this is a great place to be for a newbie.
I've had tons of brilliant advice and know that if I'm feeling a bit down, someone here will either make me laugh or realise that in the great scheme of things, it could be a **** sight worse! It's really good to know that help is just a click away. Chin up xx

Hi guys
Well I was given the news this morning that I am a Type 2 Diabetic. This information was given to me over the phone by the doctor! No face to face with this lot just dump there you are deal with it.

I have not had chance to get my new meds as I work nights and to be honest really wasnt fit enough to go get the script.

Well as my title says, Im a biker and the news has scared me to death.

Can I just bore you for a while? Ok well I will lol

Some 7 years back i had a breakdown and now suffer depression so you can imagine right at this moment what the news has done to me that way. I just feel like this on top of other problems has put the tin hat on it all.

On Facebook my friends have been kicking me up the A... saying chill out etc as if its no big deal.

I have to make an appointment with the Diabetic nurse to go through all the stuff the Doc failed to tell me and of cause pick up my meds.

Thanks guys sorry to have bored you

Take care

Tigger
Hey Tigger, you're not boring us! I'm sure that lots of folks on here have felt this way. Your Facebook "friends" need to think how they would feel if they were in the same position. I'm sure they mean well but ........... I'm still pre-diabetic (working on it to lower my risks of being type 2) but lucky in a way that I have high blood pressure and it was picked up soon enough thru a routine blood test for me to do something about.

Immerse yourself in this site and you'll find out lots and lots of good info but try not to dwell on things that might develop from badly managed diabetes - work on it in a positive way to see what you can do for yourself and start now so when you talk to the nurse you'll have a better understanding of what she's saying.. Put yourself in control and I think you will feel much better about it. Make a note of questions you want to ask and I'd also ask WHY you are being thrown straight onto meds - don't think much of your GP practice, any chance you can change? Or maybe see a more understanding Doc there?

Hi there! You have definitely come to the right site! The people here are really helpful and give great advice! I was diagnosed on 28th of Jan 2014. Doc was not a lot of use and diabetic nurse should be shot (figuratively speaking!) so I feel your pain! You could try Dietdoctor.com ( I have been been on this eating plan since 29th of Jan and have lost 9lbs without trying!). Be prepared for lots of resistance from an amassing number of people who are suddenly experts though! This website has been my sanity and a lifeline! Would also recommend a blood sugar monitor - it'll make you feel more in control! There's one you can get on line which sells cheap strips (otherwise £25 for 50) . Can't remember name but ask and someone will tell you. Doc may not give you them on prescription - mine won't! Anyway, welcome and good luck with whatever approach you decide to take!
Beat me to it - I was about to suggest testing to find out what spikes the blood sugars. Pre-diabetic but testing anyhow and I've found some of my favourite breads (the "healthy" wholegrains and seeded etc - not the sticky sweet ones) are the very worst for me but I suppose I have always liked them doorstep thick :D). Knowing what your body works best on makes you very creative at mealtimes but its actually quite nice to 'venture out' and try new things.

Well I am not called Tigger for nothing, I will bounce back. I have fought and live with Depression, Panic attacks, Deafness, Tinnitus, and Now I will fight with Diabetes. Cause fighting back is what Tiggers Do Best.

Thanks again for your support

That's GRRREEEAT (In Tony the Tiger, not Tigger, way - tho his fave brekky is out!)

But seriously, I can see how in just a few posts on here your mood has lifted incredibly - "its good to talk" as a BT advert once said.

By the way - welcome to the "Club" I forgot to say before

Having spent 28 years on stage as a comic and singer, I have also learned how to "Mask" lol but I do feel a bit better about things, just so much info to pull into the peanut lol.

Get my first meeting with the nurse on the 1st march out the way and I will pretty much "Bounce" around.

Welcome Tigger, I think every time someone new posts when diagnosed we all remember exactly how you feel right now and how joining this forum helped turn things around. You are not alone and will find a wealth of information from the people here. Try not to worry too much It takes time to get handle on it - best wishes.

Gark tinnitus yup jave that both ears most of te time l cam blank it out but l hate it. When l get stressed it has a screaming fit :-(

Welcome Tigger. It does help when you talk to people who know how you feel and have been where you are now. Don't try to take it all in at once, just change things a little at a time. :)

Well that's what Tiggers do best!! :playful:

No such thing as an ex biker lol

It's 35 years since I last rode a bike. It was a Triumph 500 Twin and I never should have sold it, but my wife-to-be was insistent. Maybe one day I'll buy another but then again..... As it is we're still married so I must have got something right. :)

l am going to ask my Dr to run a blood test for Vitimin D and Calcium l think both of those on me are low from nights and lack of sunlight so ask for those as well. Wish l had known about them before!

I took your advice and found 3 for 2 on Vitimin D and Calcium tablets so gonna start on them too.Cant hurt can it?

Cheers

Tigger

Yes can be dangerous thats why you should have a test to see you are short or not. As you are a night worker no reason for your dr to deny you...they shouldnt dent anyway.
Thats why l dont take vitimins and in this case am being tested

Hi Tigger, and welcome from a fellow biker. Im also new to the forums and I'm finding it really helpful, as I'm sure you will too.
It can be scary when you first get diagnosed, I was petrefied. But once you start getting your head around it a bit, its not so bad. I feel fitter and healthier than I have in years because of losing weight and eating better. :-) x

Tigger, while the news may have shocked you - if you think back over the recent months you can probably recall a few incidents where during or after rigorous exercise you experienced serious fatigue or tiredness. Those were the initial signs that something was probably wrong. Being type 2 isn't the end of all things adventurous or energetic - far from it. You, however, have got to get your head and your diet sorted out better. Proper good diet will keep your systems in check and regular blood glucose management will confirm to you that you are doing fine.
