 Not sure what is high in sugars in the salad world, I love lots of beetroot and tomatoes, are these ok. I'm type 2 only just been diagnosed 7 months and wont be seeing a dietecian till end of July. ( isn't the NHS super fast)
Do you have a meter to test your blood glucose levels 2 hours after eating? Most foods are trial and error. What works for one, may not work for another.
For example, I can eat up to 3 tomatoes with no spike, but someone else might spike with just one.
I have salad every day and it is not a problem for me. So I suggest you try it and then test to see what your body is happy with
Most salads are fine, although I've heard betroot is a bit dodgy for some. Google the carb content for beetroot. And if not sure. test 2 hours after eating as lucy says. You need to be 7.8 or lower.
Thanks folks, as I dont have any testing gear, pherhaps I'm overdoing this a bit, as I've only been told to avoid all processed food and eat as low fat as possible which I am doing to my best ability. But when I was told that I was type 2 it was a real shock to me. But thanks again for all the very helpful info from you all.
Hi taff. If you are checking around this forum, low fat is not the way to go. You can eat a from of Atkins but not so severe, and you need the good fats that are in avocados, olive oil, butter, cream, cheese, etc. Low fat will make you hungry, and I've found that with diabetes you obsess about food anyway without being hungry too. Check out low carbing, against the advice of the NHS and NICE but it works to bring bg's down.
Dawn is right. Most of us ignore the NHS low fat recommendations and concentrate on the carb content of our food. If you're worried about fats and want to reduce them, that's of course your choice. But I suggest it should come second to adjusting carbs to get your BGs right. And I'd invest in a meter - you need to see how various foods affect you. We're all different in that respect. If the doctor won't give you one, buy one with the cheapest strips because that is where the expense is. SD code free off the Internet is about the cheapest route at the moment.

Tomatoes are fruit and many root veggies contain digestible carbs. You just have to try and see. Perhaps start with very small portions of the suspects. I eat both without problems, but not in huge quantities.
