Hellooo!!

I have done numerous of posts before about my sciatica and well apart from being sent for an MRI at the end of March (which im freaking out about) and physio at the end of April, I seem to be in more and more pain! Not only does my right buttock and thigh hurt along with my lower back (occasionally) My calf muscle now hurts so much that its even harder to walk! :( I have been given 15/500 cocodamol/codipar it helps a little bit but not alot! I was just wondering is it possible for sciatica to get worse!!??

Hey Nicola. I'm sorry to hear about your pain due to sciatica. My first post here was about this also and I freaked out because I thought it was neuropathy instead but my doctor assured me it's not that but rather sciatica.

I'm also due a scan on my lower back. My entire left leg feels tingly (dull ache sometime) right down into my feet and sometimes it feels as if I have to drag it. I have good days and bad days. Mine may have come about due to my job which involves sitting for extended periods of time so I'm trying to exercise more in an attempt to get rid of it. Hopefully the scan will shed some light on this.

I understand sciatica is complex and everyones case is different. I know how much this can affect someone and you are not alone. I wish you all the best :)

I thought mine was something to do with an injection site but after 4 months I soon realised it's not and it's been nearly a year! I think mine started when I had an infection on my foot which was also funny! and I too sit for a long period of time at work! And I would life to exercise but it just causes too much pain! :(

Mine is a constant pain in my right buttock well just below it and now a ache and pain in my calf muscle! :(

Thank you, you too!!

i have it due to my m.e /fibro, physio daily and hydrotherapy helps x

Hello Nicola Anne,

I remember your posts and I'm really pleased you're having the MRI.

Yes, sciatica can get worse, but it depends on the exact problem. Because you may walk and move more awkwardly with one-sided pain this may affect more parts of the body as you put different strains on, say, your calf.

A neurologist told me the worst thing you can do with a bad back is to drive, followed by sitting anywhere for a long period. As PLO said, exercise is good for desk bound people. So getting up and just walking around for even a minute or so every so often will help considerably. Exercise should be gentle.

And as Totsy says, hydrotherapy and physio. are good; massage too. But a hot bath and self massage of that leg and hip are also helpful and may be easier to come by!

Good luck,
Jane.

Hello, I know the MRI is good but im sooo scared, as I have metal in my ankle! My GP told me I couldn't have one but the person at whipps cross says I can and I'm just worried now! And yeah I do get up and walk about well hobble about as much as possible! This is just so horrible I hate it! And wish it would just end now! :(

Hi, I started with sciatica over 10 years ago which was prior to being diagnosed diabetic. I was referred to physio which made the problem worse. Find yourself a chiropractioner and they we will fix you. I have been virtually pain free for years now and just have the odd re-occurance. I have known people to have scans and steriod injections, but keep getting it back. Good luck

Regarding excercise, I was told by a physio to go swimming, but this made me worse. Gentle walking is the best thing to do. Sleep with a pillow between your knees. And try to lie on your side during the day rather than sitting also helps. You can also get a cushion to sit on that is shaped like a wedge which helps with your alighnment (still use mine). Hope this helps. I never thought I would survive it, but did :)

I haven't started physio therapy yet I have that next month! Co-codamol hardly works and im just so fed up and in pain and I can barely walk and I sit at a desk from 9-5:30 :(

If you can afford to see a chiropractioner I would recommend you go straight away to one, as they are private there's no waiting lists. I also sit at a desk 8 and hours a day. Many of my colleagues also go to chiroprationers rather than physio as it works much more affectively. When I first went mine also gave me accupunctor which releived the pain (may sound scary but it was great). You should speak to health and safety etc at work to assess your work station, as this may need adjusting to improve matters. I was on stronger meds, but it never helped, just made feel out of control and floaty. Believe me, if you get the right sort of treatment it can improve vastly (I do not get re-occurances very often these days, and originally put up with the pain for about 3 years before I sort better treatment)

I will look into a chiropractor after I have seen my surgeon again I guess! See what they say! And I will look into these other things too!

Sounds like you having to sit for so long is making it worse because you are sitting on the sciatic nerve all the time. When I had it I could not sit down at all it was just agony I could only lay down on the good side. Hope that you get some relief very soon

When I had sciatica many years ago I learned to do various back bending exercises but lying on my back or front so the spine is not taking any weight. You will almost certainly have a spinal disk that is misbehaving and very gentle flexibility exercise can sometimes help get it back in place and healed. However, sometimes some surgery is necessary so it's good that you are having an MRI

NicoleAnne,
I sympathise with you, I get it really really badly too. Don't put up with it, please go see a chiropractor, one that is registered . He will be able to alleviate it for you. Also he will tell you why you have it.

The OP has scoliosis as well and so her unusual posture may well account for her sciatica.

You have to be careful when choosing a chiropractor.

Sciatica and piriformis pain can be very similar. You might search Youtube for "piriformis stretch" to see if they help you.

Good luck with your MRI.

Just as I said in your previous thread, it's very difficult to sort out treatment without having more knowledge of the problem.
The comment above about chiropractor - "Also he will tell you why you have it" may be incorrect.
Sciatic pain can be caused by various problems. The MRI should be very helpful.

We all have different conditions and different things help and don't help.
For instance, three different chiropractors didn't help me at all. Physio has been good but only because a nice massage is a relief.
I too tried the spinal injections.
An operation 12 years ago stopped the pain, but nerve function hasn't fully returned. I suppose diabetes will also contribute to this. and things are getting worse again now.

Backs are very complicated and I'd wait to talk this through with the specialist, while sitting as little as possible, sleeping on a board, avoiding cars, etc. Most of which aren't at all easy to organise, I know.

I do wish you the very best with this, but a correct diagnosis is really vital.
Jane
