So. We've had to move GPs (as we moved house last year and they've just spotted it) and I've got a chance to try again with a new diabetic nurse.

The previous one was truly awful. She started making out my metformin prescription as soon as I say down, and harrumped when I asked if we could discuss it first! She told me there were no side-effects and gave me pretty much no hope at all. I would be on it for life, then progress to insulin with likely complications! I know that's not true. Speaking to a diabetic friend who has seen her too this is apparently typical. Even the staff at the surgery know what she's like. Bizarre.

Anyway - when we registered at the new GPs I explained that I was a newly-diagnosed diabetic and have managed to get an appointment with their DN.

Fingers crossed this goes better - I can imagine it's unusual to get a second chance like this!!!

I've managed to lose 12kg since diagnosis, and go from 16 mmol/l (FBG) to 5.8 (yesterday before breakfast). Surely I'll be able to convince her I'm doing something right!!

Wish me luck!!

Geoff

PS - I've no problem with taking the metformin (and I'll probably start next week) but I'd like to discuss it first.

I'm not sure about the NHS but in Ireland we have 'GP DNs' and they just happen to be the nurse for the practise who has had a couple of trading days about diabetes. I got the same type of consultation

I went to private (as we have a two tier system here) and saw an actual DN who was wonderful and went through everything specific to me, got me in to see a dietician and endocrinologist who have all been excellent
