Seems I've had prediabetes for 8 years

After having a series of blood tests last week , the only tests to came back abnormal were a FGT and a hb1c. I don't know why the doctor ordered a hb1c but it returned with a reading of 44.0 (6.3%) and a FGT of 6.4.
The last time I had a FGT was in 2005 with a result of 6.5. No follow up was carried out for the 2005 reading so I guess I have been prediabetic for the last 8 years. My doctor has not diagnosed me with prediabetes but told me to return in 3 months to repeat the tests.
I am totally confused.

Yup! they did a similar thing with me, totally messed me around in the early years and now I'm having to work hard to keep from going on the meds.
The 44 on your Hba1c is what they call 'good control'. But that is good control for a diabetic so you should make the changes that keep that figure as far below 42 as you can.
I wish I had been better informed many years ago. Had I been I would have been much kinder to my pancreas in the intervening years. Instead, I was told that my sugars were a bit high but don't worry about it! grrrr

Exactly the same thing with me, I was told eight years I'm pre diabetic but it was dismissed as nothing so I didn't think anymore about it. Now I'm prediabetic doctors are saying to stay on diabetic diet. Mind you I take what doctors say with a pinch of salt.

Dear Taff,
I read your recent posting. Your doctor did a FGT and HbA1c test to chect your 'Overnight Fasting Blood/glucose level' and also what had been your average blood/glucose levels taken over the last 12 weeks prior to when the Blood test was taken.

From the results that are derived from the blood test, it can then establish if you have/have not/ or are sitting in limbo between the prescribed limits for diagnosing and confirming diabetes. He/She is probably concerned that your current readings shown that you are not confirmed as being a diabetic as so far they haven't crossed the boundries, however he/she is doing the right thing in keeping a close watch on you just to monitor you in case you should, hence the repeated blood/tests.

Like many of those on this diabetic site, my time before I was finally confirmed as diabetic wasn't without problems, and I was left ignorant as to why over a 2 year period they decided to do so many repeated blood/tests before I finally joined the 'Diabetic Fraternity'

Had they informed me what they were looking for, and what I should do to lower my blood/glucose through diet and appropriate exercise, then these 2 years of ignorance could have been avoided. In my case where I was hovering around the diabetic threshold (they usually need to confirm their findings TWICE in succession, I would have for instance not cycled the two miles to my doctors surgery (lowering my fasting B/G in the process) and would have been diagnosed as being a Type 2 diabetic that bit sooner.

You appear to be in the Pre-diabetic stage, so I would advise that you study and follow all that you can from this site on a healthy diet together with simple exercise as there is a chance that you might be lucky and reverse your pre-diabetic state and avoid diabetes altogether.

With my best regards - Lazybones
