Seriously need help. Type 2.

Hey All - first time poster ...

Ok so my diagnosis was made 12 + years ago when I went in for an operation. It was sorted dealt with by doctors giving me metformin. Tbh over the prevailing years I have ignored the condition - probably to the extent of abusing it. Tried sugar measuring - but am quite a neurotic person stopped. My levels are high - always thought if I don't have a hypo - then I am fine.

Last week I was due kidney stone operation - initially the pre op team said that it was not happen as my blood sugar was above 15 and I was not safe for surgery. My specialist overruled this as she knew I was flying to LA.

The operation seems was successful and I am having the stent removed today! Minor procedure.

However this has been a real make up call for me - I really want to get this under control - but scared now I do not know how to.

Being needle phobic - I won't take insulin and also hate most vegetables and salad each day is boring.

I only know one other diabetic who injects - but his diet is worse than mine.

Really at a dead end now !

Advice ?

In all honesty @Charltonfan ? Get to like your greens, cooked or raw, otherwise either your plate will be a bit empty or your Blood Sugars will remain high, even though you have had the condition a long time I will tag @daisy1 who will post some really useful info for you to read and research.
If you don't yet have a meter, get one. It's only a small prick and it is a vital piece of kit, as vital as having a steering wheel in your car.
Try and avoid Beer, Bread, Pasta, Potato and Rice at least until your Blood Sugars are under control.
 
Thanks Walnut Face - wow I don't drink - but no bread, pasta, potato and Rice ... Only leaves salad ...

There are bread alternatives. Lidl protein rolls or Livlife low carb bread which is sold in Waitrose and tolerated well by many.

Potato, pasta and rice are probably amongst the most unforgiving things you can eat for glucose control though. That said, as a daily potato eater that has since given them up completely, I have found cauliflower mash with lashings of real full fat butter to be a delicious alternative.
 
Thanks James - will look into the bread options. cauliflower/cabbage/brocolli are my 3 biggest hates - they make me constantly Gag ! Not please tell for the people at table with me ! Especially in a restaurant.

Do you not eat meat/fish? FYI Mashed couliflower tastes nothing like cauliflower. There is also celeriac and butter beans as alternatives to spuds, Konjac instead of pasta
 
Love meat (not red), some fish - sushi big plus. Can't get it in Rochester !!! Thought butter was really bad for you ! I will try all this stuff once !

Ok so you've now had a serious wake up call, it's either a case continue to bury your head in the sand and live with the consequences when they strike which inevitably they will or deal with it. It's easy to make up excuses, but actually it's almost like becoming re-born as you learn to live life differently, the fact is you now have a choice.

Cauliflower can be mixed with chilli, salt, spices to make an excellent cauliflower rice which you can eat by the bucket load, vegetables again can be evolved to taste fabulous, flavoured oils, garlic can turn something boring into something fabulous.
Start loving cheese, butter, dairy and protein. Golden rule is to avoid anything processed, it generally contains high carbs/sugar and will send your BG levels sky rocket, do a cooking course and learn to love fresh, it can (more easily than you imagine) be done ;)
 
Thanks juicyJ - also is juicing an ok alternative - use to juice a lot - but main stay was oranges ( which someone told me was too complexed) for a diabetic !

and have a good look round the low carb section of the forum to see what others are eating. It isn't all greens and salads!

If you have a meter (and you must get one if you haven't) then that will tell you what you can or can't eat, and in what portion size. I am another that doesn't like greens apart from on my Sunday roast. My meter has told me I can manage a couple of new or roast potatoes, and also a small handful of chips (between 6 and 10 maximum) It has also told me I cannot eat normal bread, but I can eat a Lidl HP roll. We all have different food tolerances, so it is a matter of finding yours - eat to your meter and you will find a lovely way of eating that you enjoy and that keeps your BS levels down.

Sadly juicing is breaking fruit down into a purer form of sugar, so it will literally send your BG levels sky high, I tend to have juice when I have a low blood sugar episode as it brings me up quickly !

Hello Rob, just commenting on "needle phobic". Personally the 2 times my blood was tested in the lab, I passed out because I dislike seeing blood and so. Also I hated syringes or any kind of needles. But el7amduLLILAH(PRAISE TO Allah) with my insulin pen, taking it bymyself and measuring my blood glucose by myself there is no phobia/fear or whatsoever, this is true even though if I go one day in the future in the lab I expect to pass out.
 
@Charltonfan - Hello Rob and Welcome to the Forum :). Keep a Food Diary - test your blood before, then eat, then wait 2 hours and test again.
Record all these test results and the food you ate - you will soon get to grips with what you can eat and what foods to avoid. Remember we are all different, and our bodies react differently to food.
