Sharps Bin

For 9 years I took my full sharps bins to my GPs and got an exchange,
Then all of a sudden they said they couldn't do that anymore, I had to make arrangements for the council to collect them every 24 weeks.
I had to beg the collections man for enough bins, I needed three but they where only willing to give me the one.
I had to start getting those little one litre bins on prescription.

My GP surgery have come back saying they will supply me with one...SORTED.

ally1 - if you're GP is not prescribing what you need KICK UP A FUSS. I had an annual review at my local hosp last week and the consultant said that I can test myself however many times I want and therefore can request test strips (as well as lancets/pen needles) from the GP as many times as I need. If they didn't prescribe, the consultant advised me to let them know and presumably they would intervene.

Thank you everyone for help & advice, K

Mines on a prescription, haven't got it on repeat though as it lasts for 2 months or so , have to request prescription every time, then when full handed it to the chemist, they dispose of it especially if you get all your prescriptions from there.

I used to put the used needles back in the green protective cover and put back in my insulin pen holder. I didnt have one at work.

Isn't it only T1's who need sharps bins I didn't think they would give them to T2's on perscription
Type 2 use insulin injections. Local council will supply them and when full exchange

I'm Type II, sharps bin on repeat prescription and collected by local council, when they feel like it.

If you don't get a sharps bin from your GP practise how do you if you are T2 and funding your own strips and lancets dispose of the used ones

Can anyone tell me where/how to get a sharps bin? I need a small one for work, for spent insulin pen needles and finger prick lancets.

I've asked the local hospital specialist diabetes service (where I go for annual checkups) and they say they cannot help.

Do I have to see my GP then, will they be able to supply this?!
just a thought could you ask at a chemist about one ,i know its naff idea but they do have small ones they give to responsabile !!!! junkies ,you could always ask , if not you could always use a very small plastic drinks bottle with screw top and just transfer contents to larger sharps bin when you get home

It's not about which type of diabetes one has. If you have items on your persecution that once used become a 'bio hazard' (pen needles & finger prickers etc) these need to be incinerated. It seems from the posts here that different areas have different set ups. Here in Hastings the first bin is prescribed by your GP, they then notify the local council who arrange a replacement bin and safe disposal of the full bin a pone request.

never had one, or been told I need one................

I use an old coffee jar in work for any sharps/used test strips............same at home for all my pump stuff.......

No I never got offered one either Novo, I had to ask my gp. There's some advice in the following from the NHS about the safe disposal of needle and lancets:

I asked my GP for a sharps bin and was refused. I took my used sharps to the chemist in a plastic bottle/glass jar for years until they took pity on me (or got sick of transferring them into an authorised container) and gave me a small sharps bin.

Can't see how your gp can refuse, if you read the link to the NHS it clearly states that used sharps should be disposed of in a sharps bin, perhaps you should print it off and show them it Chris.

I don't get on with my surgery and they seem to think I'm enough of a drain on the system already so it's easier for me to deal with the chemist directly.

Probably best then Chris, none of us are a drain on society as we didn't ask for diabetes to come into our lives.

I requested a sharps container from my GP but they gave me a Council contact number. I then had to jump through hoops with the Council who then put me in contact with an external contractor. Got one in the end:)
