Shell shocked

Thank you all! And I'm glad your toes didn't fall off @runner2009!! Feeling much better tonight. One thing I am really noticing is that I get full quickly and stay feeling fuller longer which is a definite bonus.

Trying to stay positive.

It's a dreadful shock to be diagnosed. It happened to me in December 2012, just before xmas.
Thankfully, there are a lot of resources online to help you figure out how to deal with it. It is very daunting.

The main advice I'd offer is this:

Find out what works for you.

There are some very low carbers, low GI or high protein dieters here on the website, and I've found that it is best to get a meter and some strips, and slowly work out a diet that works for you, then stick to it.

Sticking to it is the hard part, once you have regained control. Many of us have fallen off the wagon, and got back on again etc etc. Without a meter, you can't tell how you are doing, so let that be your guide.

Good luck :) It's not all bad, it just means you have to pay more attention to your body and it's reaction to what you put in it.

Thanks! I've really struggled today - the first time I've seriously craved carbs. Stuck to my guns although I think I may have overdone the salted roasted almonds!!

Trying the cauliflower mash with roast chicken tonight. Waiting to see the doc later this week for results if cholesterol and kidney function so I'll ask about a testing meter then and get myself one if they don't provide them. The NHS wheels are turning albeit very slowly. Three weeks after diagnosis and still no official dietary advice.

What are the reasons they'll give me for not following LCHF and are they valid? Everything I read seems to suggest this is the way forward?

That's what really does my brain in. They still do not give you official dietary advice yet seem to be experts in instantly saying " no way to LCHF "
Over the next few months I would prefer to learn from your experience and knowledge in a view to help others regarding diabetes, rather than old fashioned beliefs of the NHS.
Hope you Doctor is very supportive to your requirements, Got to say my Doctor is so understanding, she even recommended me to look into this site, how good is that.
Mind you in my opinion the dn nurse is untrained in diabetes matters.
Best of luck and hope you don't have to struggle to much :):)

Hey Sam

Of course you are going to have cravings and binge out - just as one would normally do. But it doesn't have to be a struggle or dramatic change all at once.

May I go head and make a suggestion, start out slowly and evolve over a 3-month period of time. Your numbers will be getting better and you will learn to enjoy.

Depending on your previous diet I would suggest not doing LCHF right off but first take your normal diet and modify it in amount and make it what is called a "consistent carbohydrate diet'.

Based on your last diet chose a number of carb servings you will eat per meal - 2-servings through 5-servings. Each serving is 15g of carbs.

Make it simple don't use net carbs and eat those number of carbs each meal.

As you get used to it and measure your BG you can slowly bring the carbs down.

If your numbers are high you can switch out carbs and quickly bring them down with exercise.
