Morning All,

A quick question about the shingles vax ( not diabetes related I know) as I know that some of you on here have had the vaccination.

Was talking to my mum about it last night and she said that she was going to book for one after her birthday. I thought it was available to people once they turned 70 up until their 80th birthday. Looking on the NHS website it appears that you can only have it if you are aged 70 or 78 ??

Meaning if you don't have it at age 70 then you have to wait until your 78th birthday. Does that sound correct ?

Seems a very odd way to apply a prevention program......

The regulations are worded in a confusing manner on the nhs Website, but from my previous life as an infectious diseases nurse, I understand it to be available for people aged 70-79 yrs old

They invite you to have the jab when you are 70. If you don't have it then you can have it any time in the following 3 years. I think the 78 year olds weren't offered the jab when they were younger. The NHS does not provide the jab over 80.

I think the computer is set to send out the letters at 70 and 78 and each GP buys the vax based on the expected response. But they will give it to poeple between 70 and 80 provided they have enough.

thanks @Rachox that's how I read it too but as you say it is worded somewhat confusingly on the website. My mum still works (in a nursing home looking after the 'old' people  ) so has exposure. I might tell her that she needn't wait until her birthday.

No, what it means is that you can have the Zostavax between the age 70 up to 78 years of age.

The cut off date here in Australia is 79 for the vax.
