During World War 2 there were 2 brothers who decided to volunteer to serve their country. They arrive at the army careers office and were met by the recruiting sergeant. At birth one had been born with enormous eyes and the other brother with enormous ears. The sergeant looked at the brother with the enormous ears and told him that with his big ears he would not be able to get the steel helmet on his head that soldiers wear for head protection and therefore he could not be accepted for the army. He looked at the brother with the very large eyes and explained that soldiers were sometimes required to wear a gas mask and that with his huge eyes the mask would not fit properly. He therefore would not be allowed to join the army. The 2 brothers went to the air force recruiting office and attempted to sign up. The wing commander took a look at both of them and explained that the brother with the big ears would not be able to close the cockpit cover on the aeroplane and that the one with the big eyes would not be able to get flying goggles to fit him so both were rejected. Finally in desperation they went to the navy recruiting office upon which the rear admiral took one look at them both explained that they were just what the navy was looking for and signed them both up immediately. 3 weeks later they were both on a destroyer in the North Atlantic and the captain sent the brother with the large eyes up into the crow’s nest on lookout for enemy ships. After an hour of sailing through very dense fog he shouts out that there is an enemy heavy cruiser located off the port bow and the captain is alerted. The captain looks through binoculars but sees no ship and starts to reprimand the brother with the big eyes. Another lookout using a telescope sees the faintest waft of smoke 75 miles off the port bow and the captain takes a look through the telescope. The ship diverts and is saved from being destroyed by the enemy. The captain apologises to the brother with the big eyes and tells him that he is recommending him for a medal for saving the ship and the crew from certain destruction. The brother is very grateful for the commendation and looking a little embarrassed explains that he cannot take all of the credit. The captain asks why this is? Upon which he explains ‘Well you see, our kid heard them talking’
