After a viral infection I was diagnosed as diabetic, about 5 years ago. Don't know the tec terms but my figures are slowly getting worse. 3 monthly blood test is now 54 ( was as low as 38 when first diagnosed ) and my fasting blood is now 10 ( from about 5.5 )
By BMI is about 26 and my cholesterol is 4.8 ( came down from 5 with a bit of a diet change. I am fit, cycling 4x13 miles a week. SHOULD I GO ON STATINS? and if so Why.

Personally I wouldn't but only you can make that decision. there are quite a few threads about statins on here so probably easiest to do a search for those and have a read through. Also look up Malcom Kendricks Book - The Great Cholesterol Con.
For me Low carb high fat diet (see www.dietdoctor.com website for great free info on this) has improved both glucose levels and lipid profile (far more than any statin could) and I now eat very little carb but plenty of above ground veg, proteins and good fats (butter, olive oil, coconut oil and full fat dairy - double cream and berries is a regular treat). Up to 5.5 total cholesterol used to be considered 'normal' until the drug companies wanted to sell more drugs it seems and then it has got lowered and lowered. The NHS has a one size fits all approach so any diabetic is immediately offered statins without regard to any other factors. It appears that diet and exercise would have a much better effect for most people than statins and diet and exercise have no side effects other than getting thinner and fitter.

If you need to be convinced to go on them, it sounds like you've already decided you shouldn't?

Hi. There are endless threads on these forums and on the web about statins; the debate continues. With a level of 4.8 personally I wouldn't take statins unless there was a family history of heart disease but you must make the decision.
