Hi,

I've been lurking for a while and wandered if you amazing people could offer me some advise. I appreciate it is not instead of a gp opinion but need some human opinion first as I have a phobia of gps!
I've always been underweight and struggle but can't put it on. I'm always hungry and I have been experiencing hypos. I know this because my cousins are diabetics and my one today was 2.9 and I felt awful.
I don't have many other symptoms. Random ones are cramp in my feet lots, hormone problems and thirst.
I had big big big babies and was tested for gestational diabetes (6 years ago) and I never heard back so presumed it was fine!
My main worries are the hypos I get, they come sometimes randomly, always when I eat chocolate at certain times of day and when u do gardening.
My 2 aunts and 2 cousins are t1 so do you think I should visit my gp. It petrifies me but I can't have hypos.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

None of us can diagnose you, so going to see your doctor is the wisest course of action.

Presumably you are able to measure your BG since you've given us readings - maybe worth while tracking more measurements, before and after meals and so on to get a better picture of what is happening.

Meanwhile, you might find information that resonates with you in the Reactive Hypoglycemia topic:

Hi @HannahJones
first -- welcome to the forum :)
sounds scary for you but try not to worry if you can.

do you find that eating makes you feel worse sometimes ?
are you taking any medication at all ?

I am tagging @nosher8355 as he lives with a condition not unknown to us D's but certainly not one that comes up as often.
I am referring to reactive hypoglycemia

take care hun -- and if feeling low right now try to eat something protein based rather than sugary for the short term

Even if your test for gestational diabetes came back normal, having large babies is a risk factor for later developing diabetes anyway. I think the threshold is something like over 10lb, not sure.

I agree with the others, a visit to your GP sounds like a good idea. What is it that you don't like about seeing them? Maybe we can help you feel better about it. Hope so, anyway.

Thank you for your kind replies. I have been twice to the gp, the first time she asked me if I had an eating disorder as I'm petite (lots of my family are so we compained) and the second time I had pneumonia and was told
I had a cold with sinus problems, I ended up in hospital so after twice not really being listened to scared me and I think it's got worse over time.

Thank you for the link to the other thread, I've read the first couple of pages and it is very interesting so I will have a good read through.

A always feel sleepy after I eat, I'm sure that is fairly normal for a busy mother and I also have a problem with my eyes after I eat where I get a floater and flashes and this always happens after I eat dinner or lunch.

I got a monitor after we were doing our garden up as I kept thinking I was having hypos whenever I gardened and got the monitor and they were always 2. Something even if I gardened after lunch but have to be honest put it away when things settled and I learnt what to avoid but they have been coming back at the moment so will monitor more closely.

Thank you again for the replies as I know it may not have been an appropriate place to post but you have all been lovely.

Hi HannahJones, and welcome to the forum! It is totally understandable why you are reluctant to go to your gp, however it sounds like you really need to go and get a blood test. If I were you, I would be asking for an hba1c test (this helps identify if there is too much glucose in your blood and an indicator of t1/t2 diabetes), and an antibody test (which if positive would confirm t1 diabetes). In saying this, it does sound as though you are more likely to have Reactive Hypoglycemia than diabetes, but no harm in ruling other things out! Nosher8355 has a lot of experience and I'm sure will be able to give you some good advice and guidance around RH!

Good luck and keep us up to date :) x x

Hi,
Yes, do have a look at the links and threads.
Having hypos continually is not fun!

Yes I should visit your GP. And ask if he knows why you are having hypoglycaemic episodes.
The doctor may not not know about the condition or type as there is more than one type of RH. Ask for a referral, to an endocrinologist as there is definitely something going on.

If I was you I would definitely have a look at what you are eating. A carb, sugar heavy (chocolate) diet would have me in a state!
I would eat little and often, during the day, stay away from the starchy veg and grains, etc. Have a read of the low carb forum.
Once you have control, you can experiment with your food.
Ask as many questions as you like, but go the doctors, then come back and us RH ers will help you with what's going on.
Best wishes.

Please don't do nothing!

Hi. Yes, you must see the GP. From other posts Reactive Hypoglycemia is just one possibility. If the GP doesn't understand the possibilities, do ask to be referred to the hospital diabetes clinic

If you have had issues with your GP before it's understandable that you're reluctant to go. I would seriously consider changing to a different Surgery/ GP if you have another you can access easily. Don't wait to get these symptoms checked out though.

p.s. I've never heard of RH before so I might have a read myself!

I hadn't heard of RH before a few months ago @BeccyB, when I read a few RH posts in the forum - interesting reading and @nosher8355 and @Brunneria are v patient and good at explaining things if anyone has questions :) (Sorry Nosher and Brunneria, hope you don't mind me tagging you and offering your knowledge to others lol! x)

Nah!

Just reread your initial post.
@HannahJones

If you don't want to see your named GP, how about visiting an out of hours doctor at your local walk in clinic. Ours around here is attached to the hospital!

Hi and welcome, @HannahJones

It seems i have come late to your thread, but i just wanted to chip in and say hello.

If you feel the RH info is relevant, please have a good rummage through the threads, and ask anything you like. :)

Thank you again for your replies. It happened again today, I thought I was going to pass out, fortunately it came on in the shops and I was able to nip into a pharmacy, 2.6 and they gave me some glucose tablets to crunch and I began to feel better. I had a sandwich which made me feel able to go home. I now feel exhausted, my head feels fuzzy and my eyes have gone all baggy and black circles round them.
I know I definitely can't go on like this so will make an appointment with the doctor. I think tho I will keep a diary for a couple of weeks first to go armed with evidence!!
I just am so confused as I haven't changed my diet or activity levels and I eat quite well.
Thank k you for putting up with my ramblings, you have really provided me with some great information and have been such a support.

Hi Hannah,
Try and read as much as you can, always treat a hypo like that in an emergency.
Educating yourself is really important and this forum is really supportive no matter what type or condition you end being diagnosed with.

The reason you have become as you call it, fuzzy headed, I know that feeling well, is because your blood glucose levels are up and down, fluctuating, and the best way is to have something small, with only a few carbs and no sugar.
You will have to reduce your carbs slowly any way, unless you want to feel awful all the time!

Yes, do see your GP and with as much evidence of what you have eaten and your test results.

If there is anything you can think of to answer, someone on here will help.

Hi
As a type 2 Diabetic, that is a Pharmacy Technician in a doctors surgery, the answer is yes, even if you are not diabetic you need to find out why you are having hypos.

You don't have to go alone to your appointment, ask someone to go with you, it will help.

Good luck

I have been reading through the reactive hypoglycaemia threads and it is scary how much I can relate to a lot on there. I am now wandering how much hormones are playing a part too as they are out of balance at the moment too. It is very interesting and I am relieved I feel I can finally relate to something as I was at a total loss before.

Yes, hormones play a big part in how your body works.especially the endocrine system.
The way your body digests food and types of food and the imbalance doesn't help with the way you feel and how healthy you are.
