Should I go to see the doctor? Or am I worrying for nothing?

Hello,

Recently I have been doing random blood sugar level tests through a little machine that pricks my finger and gives a reading. As I understand 4.5 is a normal number to be at.

Just before dinner today for no apparent reason my blood sugar level was 6.9, it has never been so high and is getting me worried. Is that acceptable? I don’t know but it makes me feel light headed. I had not eaten anything between lunch and dinner and my simple carb intake has been at the minimum so I have no idea how sugar is getting into my blood stream.

At the moment I do not know what is affecting me, maybe all the fruit that I eat in the evenings make me wake up in such a terrible way, I know fruit converts into sugar or something and my mouth is usually so dry in the mornings.

Right now I feel light headed and my heart is beating kind of fast, this has been a usually occurrence for the past year or so.

I usually feel lazy and tired but I do push myself to get on the treadmill now and again, yesterday I managed 1 hour walking at an incline at 4mph.

I am constantly trying to lose weight through healthy food and exercise but the weight just does not come off.

I feel depressed and peed off at the moment because my weight is not coming off which I’m assuming is affecting my blood sugar levels.

I guess I just want some kind of confirmation that something is wrong with me, I’m pretty sure there is as my mother, father and brother are all diabetic.

I am thinking to monitor my blood sugar levels for 2 weeks and take the results to the doctor, or should I just book an appointment tomorrow? What do you guys think?

I think you should get tested, even if it is just to put your mind at rest. LLoyds chemists do tests too. I was diagnosed last week with diabetes type 2 and had much same symptoms as you. My father has had diabetes since his 40s, I am overweight and over 40 so I fit every category.
My main symptoms were feeling really really tired with no energy for anything and also feeling really hot all the time. Kids complained house is cold but I was sweating. Thought it might have been the menopause!
I don't think 6.9 is too high to panic yet. Mine was 15.6 night before I went to doctor(dad tested me) and fasting reading next morning was 13.9.
I think the best indication is to test it first thing in morning before eating and if it is higher than 7/8 (I think) then there is a chance of you being diabetic. I was tested 2 years ago and it was around 8 but was told not diabetic.
I am no expert as I say my diagnosis is just recent but I want to help put your mind at ease. As you are a new member you will get in depth information from the experts shortly.
Hope you are OK and feel free to ask anything.

Hi Tim, and welcome!

The best thing for you to do is to make an appointment to see your GP, explain your worries and get properly tested. Get an appointment early in the morning and don't eat anything for 12 hours before your appointment; drink only plain water. They should take a fasting blood glucose test for you, and go on from there.

Non-diabetic blood sugar levels are: 3.5 to 5.5 mmol/l, fasting/before meals; less than 8mmol/l 2 hours after meals.

No-one on here is qualified to diagnose you, but we've all got lots of experience and are happy to help. See your GP to get a diagnosis, then come back and tell us how you've gone on, and ask any questions you like.

With so many diabetics in the family you are right to keep a close eye on yourself. You could try to tweak your lifestyle a bit, to be diabetic-friendly, in any case. I eat low-carb which I find is good for both weight loss and my blood glucose levels!

Good luck!

This morning my sugar levels were 6.1 after a 12 hour fast. I'm not going to go to the doctor for this as I know nothing will come of it.
I have decided to try a low GI diet from Tesco's website, hopefully it makes me feel better and more active.

You're wrong not to go. A simple test will tell you one way or the other, then you can deal with it appropriately. You may be "pre-diabetic", which means a simple change in life style could ward off diabetes. But you need to know. For what it's worth, your readings aren't very high at all, and it's highly unlikely that the sort of "symptons" you described in your first post have anything to do with diabetes. But until you get a test, you'll carry on thinking about it.

You should go and be tested. Knowledge is power and if you know one way or the other, you can move on in a positive pro-active way that is the best for you.
