Hi just got a spare bg meter and strips on prescription from my doctor when i went to the chemist to pick up the prescription there was 2 items , lancets and test strips, i usually pay for prescriptions so i was very surprised when i asked her how much i had to pay and she said it was free if you have diabetes , i thought it was only free if you was on medication :?

As far as i know like you said its free only if you take medication. If i hand out a prescription for strips i normally assume that the person is on meds as not many drs will do a script however i always ask if they have there medical excemption card as it can be a large fine for a person to pay if they are one of the people whos prescriptions get checked at random. I would def question it next time.

The exemption from payment is only if a medical exemption certificate is held. They are issued to people with diabetes who are on medication. Even if you are a diabetic on medication, you have to pay for your medication unless you have applied for and received the certificate. You will notice that the box on the back of the prescription talks about having the certificate and not being a diabetic on medication.

Hope this helps

Couldnt rest scared to death of getting in trouble went down to chemist and voiced my concerns and she admitted she had made a mistake so paid and now i can sleep at night

Hi Osidge. Well, I've never had a certificate and no one has ever asked for one in 8 years and no one has ever suggested I pay anything. Possibly this is because I was 60'ish at diagnosis?

If you are entitled not to pay prescription charges for an other reason, i.e. women over 60, then the medical exemption is not an issue.

Its all over 60's now Doug not just the women as I found out last year when I was told I didnt have to tick the exemption box any more and to tick the over 60 box instead - made me feel old  I was surprised they knew I was 60 :?

8 months to go for me Sid although I managed to get a free bus pass (and it covers trains, tubes and trams here in London) a couple of years ago as I lost my driving license on the diagnosis of sleep apnoea.
