Sick to death of Doctors.

NO! You have a voice! If it doesn't feel right for you (or your body) to hell with the doctor's opinion and you do what you know is right for you. It is your body and you have to stick up for yourself!!! xxx

Horrible_al, whilst I sympathise with how you may be feeling, I do have to point out the Doc's words that this class of meds, ".... may cause you to PUT WEIGHT ON. ...."

That some may gain weight doesn't necessarily mean you would.

I feel your pain, @horrible_al. Doctors are forever including the possible side-effects, particularly with certain drugs and certain patient concerns, but I would too if I was a doctor. It may..it may not..but I'm telling you so you are prepared. That said, I totally get your frustration. As for abandoning the chemicals altogether, I wouldn't say no. Obviously, we all differ and many benefit from certain drugs...need them even. That said, I stopped taking meds for my diabetes as soon as I was convinced that my blood sugars were pretty well under control with a low carb diet alone. I kept records of what I ate, when I ate it and what my levels were before and 2.5 hours after eating. I also recorded when I took my Gliclazide and how ineffective it was on its own. This info and my progress made it easy to convince my doctor. It all depend son how high your levels are and whether or not you can sustain an appropriate diet/approach. Many Type 2s don't rely on meds to keep their blood sugar in check. It is...your choice..and the more informed you are, the easier that choice is. Good luck,

I used to feel the same way... these days I just can't afford to worry myself as I'm dealing with enough. I take on board what docs tell me and they're either helping me or they're not. Some really have given me silly answers over the years and I can tell they don't know much on the subject. I'm grateful I do have a good GP and he gets as equally frustrated as I do. He does give me the warnings about drugs though and tries to keep my drug intake to a minimum as I'm quite sensitive to a lot of drugs too. I was on oral meds for diabetes for 5 years and I did feel like it was a case of "do this or pay the consequences" type of warning. But by the time I went on oral meds my diet and exercise alone wasn't working for me. I think personally I was already starting to lose my insulin production when I went on oral meds. The last couple of years on oral meds for me was like I was almost on nothing to help as they changed dosages, etc... but still not much improvement. I'm thankful I found out why and now I'm on the right treatment. I know it's frustrating... I find all the diseases I have frustrating to be honest. It's hard to get effective treatment 100% of the time. Hopefully your doc will work with you though... you know your body best so make sure you let them know what you agree with and you don't. Push for answers if you need them as noone else will.... you're the best advocate for your health. I wish you the best.

I would certainly agree that one should not take doctor's advice uncritically, but I can see your GP's basic rationale. If you are using medication to bring down your BGs and you can't cope with metformin, then taking a sulfonylurea like glimepiride is the normal next step. Ideally of course you would be able to get BGs under control just by diet, but if you need a bit of medication too, then a small increase in glimepiride MAY increase your weight, but if you are low carbing that may help to offset that effect. If you can 'give up with the chemicals altogether' and can still keep your BGs low, then go for it! But if not I wouldn't give up on your GP yet.

If only it was a vet. They used to have more training. A lot of us feel that we are constantly banging our heads against a wall.

No one makes us go to the doctors.

Your dr has options to help with high bgs. So do you. Work together to get a lasting uncomplicated diabetic life. Its a long journey even in remission.

Not every fight has to be alone!

What are your typical bgs without meds? I'm sure those tablets are twice a day so how are you fairing without and with?

My advice is don't be to quick to right off help, but only get help when you need it. (Higher bgs than 7.8mmol/l)

Mind you they do just kill the patient if the treatment is too difficult or expensive.

Hi. Glimepiride won't cause weight gain but if you have too many carbs with it you may gain weight. Glimepiride stimulates the production of insulin which can then metabolise the glucose. Do you know why the GP increased your dose? Presumably due to a high HBa1C? If with low carbs your blood sugar goes too low then do ask the GP to review the dosage.

Not free like the NHS.
Then again, if those who don't like doctors, didn't waste their time, the NHS would be better off financially.

I do.
A couple of families round here fell out with the local surgery, as it was thought that one or two of the GPs were not very good at their jobs, and were removed from their list.... not happy times.

The NHS is patently not "free" as you described it - it costs. I get quite annoyed when people talk about it being free. Even more annoyed when people think that it is ok to sue the NHS.. who do they think picks up the tab for that?

It's certainly free.
The fact some of us pay taxes doesn't alter who uses it.
And I'm more than happy to support those that don't get the service that should be delivered.
