Sigmoidoscopy

Yep had it done just before Christmas.

My 2 chaps doing it gave me the results straight away.. Whilst doing it infact.. You can see the camera moving arkund your innards and talk to them and ask what they are seeing...

I wasnt offered and sedation and it wasnt too bad.. Certainly less horrible than the barium enema!!

I have also had a 'shapes' test where I took capsules over 3 days and then had an xray. This should have shown zero shapes out of the 60 I swallowed left in me.
The xray showed I still had 48!! So now waiting for tve xray report to cone back officially and for the results of the blood tests before further tests...

The sigmoidoscopy was far easier than the barium. Not nice having to do an enema at home 2hrs before the test.. I didnt have that much to come out of me because I minimalised my food intake for 2 days prior..

These ops arent nice... But they are necessary...

Are you type 1 or 2?

Hope all goes well for you..

You too for going thru mill! Ibs not a bundle of laughs either is it? And so many people actually get diagnosed with that rather than being given a full investigation too.

Diet can play a huge part which really annoys me in some sense because I eat so healthily with meat and 5/6 veg each day....

However, i have had 2 HCP's at different times in past few months to eat low fibre and low fat..another gastro chap said to eat all crunchy fruit n veg....which all hi fibre Another one... The current gastrochap said to carry on as normal... So at moment that what I am doing.... But my trouble is that I get totally blocked up.. Despite good healthy meat and veg etc each day.. The reason for the 'shapes' test was to see how long it took my innards to progress the food n waste thru my stomach.. Which should have been a lot faster...

However, i noticed one factor that may have a part to play in my stomach probs, but never heard of anybody else experiencing it..... Jelly babies....
I always had milk n sugar as a hypo stopper or mini mars bars.... My HCP insisted that I changed to jelly babies...and only jelly babies... My stomach troubles only have really came to fruition since eating only jelly babies as hypo stoppers....that is the only thing in my diet that has completely changed....
I hsve since stopped all jelly babies as hypo stoppers... And havent had a blocked bowel now for two full months.. Where as the probs were occuring once a month.....i believe that in my instance jelly babies had a big impact on the lining or interior functioning of my stomach... But have never heard of anybody else experiencing this...and no gastrochap could say whether they would or wouldnt. I was given all the meds to get my stomach moving through, but havent needed to take any since stopping the jelly babies...

Hey ho..what fun lifes we live!!!??? Hope you get some answers for why your stomach is changing its habits.. If you have to have a sigmoidoscopy.. Have it.. Best to know and have all tests done.. They can tell alot from it...
Best wishes

Yes I have had the camera up the bum (sigmoidoscopy) twice now. They screen some of us old people for polyps and in my case they certainly found some.

They won't give me anesthetic because it makes you go a bit forgetful and they are frightened I will have an unspecified accident. It is an uncomfortable procedure but not painful and you get tea and sandwiches afterwards. There is nothing to be concerned about.

I was issued with hospital underpants and it was explained that the flies went at the back which makes sense so they do everything they can to maintain dignity in an unusual situation. I even got to see the opening which is the neck of my appendix. Yes they certainly go in a long way.

I will be getting another one this year and as far as I am concerned the worst bit is the purgative the day before.

When I had a gastroscopy some years back I asked the guy doing it if it was the same instrument used in Sigmoidoscopy.

"Yes" he said, "But don't worry, we gave it a quick swill before using it for a your gastroscopy!"

I still don't know if they actually use the same instrument or if its a different one.

I asked him who he used it on last and he gave me every assurance that it had been thoroughly cleaned. He didn't have a sense of humour.

During my barium enema ... Which I found really awful.. I asked the gastrochap -'how old is omdest person that you done with this..?'
His response a lady -102 years old!!!

I shut up moaning then!!!! I'm not even 1/2 that age!!!
I said 'I hope she had Carers with her and when she got home...'

Nope.. She lived independently.... I had chronic cramps and felt really sorry for myself and went to bed when I got home!!!

Be blowed if I would have a barium enema at 102!!!
