Hey folks

Can anyone recommend a type 1 friendly sleep aid. I've had a few months where my sleeps been interrupted for one reason or another and it's impacting on my mood and how quickly I become frustrated. I've started to feel low and think if I could kick start my sleeping routine with a bit of help I'll soon be back in the swing of it.

Thanks all.

Hey @Shazzle80:)

I can't recommend any medicinal sleep aids first hand, but I would recommend some evening exercise. I find it helps to de-stress (if that's the root cause of your sleeplessness) and also tires you out, naturally.

It may be a 10k run or equally a nice stroll along the beach. It really depends on you.

Just to add, are your BG's okay? It's not hypos that are waking you is it?

Hope you get a good kip soon!

Any sleep aid will most likely make your a bit groggy the next morning, though any OTC sleep aid shouldn't affect your diabetes (although I won't guarantee it).
Plus avoid using too often as you can develop a dependency.
I've tried both herbal and anti-histamine based sleep aids before.

Thanks folks. My blood sugars are usually good though I am having a phase (as we all do for what ever reason) where my bloods are higher than usual. I'm trying to get them to 7 before bed because I know that helps. I've just bought a herbal remedy to try. The box recommends 2 tablets for a restful and unbroken sleep but going to try one and see how it goes. I have a libre so if it works my husband can keep an eye on blood sugars during the night. Stress wise I'm okay. I balance home and work well I think, I tend to exercise during the day as I work part time. As a rule evening exercise makes me more hyped up! Xxx

Personally I'd try and find out what's causing it rather than taking a sleeping aid, so worries/stress ? High bg levels ? Using a device in the evening ? Generally there's a cause so understanding it will help solve the sleep issue :)

Most OTC sleep aids active ingredients are just anti-histamines, so if you want to try something, the just a Piriton, or the like, mid-evening?

I have irratic sleep patterns. The usual lavender in the pillow and relaxing bath before bed helps me but dark room at the correct temperature helps me the most. Sweating in sleep can be a sign of somogyi effect through the night. Libre would be a good identifier.
Higher bgs make me warmer, in bed. You?

Hi Shazzle80.
Have you tried mindfulness?
If you focus on your breathing all other thoughts disappear. You don't get distracted by them. Think about each breath. Look down towards your mouth when your eyes are closed and slow your breathing, thinking about every breath. Your mind will empty of other thoughts and you will drift off.

I agree with all of the above but will say i used Nytol when I was really struggling to sleep last year - basically a lot on my mind and not able to switch off. Only took them a few nights (they worked!) and I can't recall the effect, if any, on my BS.
