Good evening
Has anyone else with type 1 on insulin tried slimfast diet successfully?! If I pre bolus (on pump) 10mins prior then have the shake I'm ok for the first couple hours and then I start to hypo so wondering if it just dosen't work for us type 1s or if anyone has any tips they can share?
 
Hello there, i've not tried it but sounds like your insulin dose calculation was too much if you're going hypo after a couple of hours - from what information are you basing your calculation on ? The other thought is if you have lost weight and do your insulin ratios need a review.

250ml shake prepared is 32g carbs with 21g sugar. I'm half guessing that the sugar is the problem. The same think happens if I have a donut for breakfast. Maybe slimfast is just not compatible to type 1s

I only did 2 days of it so the weight loss hasn't been the problem yet I don't think
 
There are other shake makers that do the same job of weightloss diet. Optifast, Cambridge diet, Exante to name some that were used in the Newcastle diet study.

These shakes are classed as ultra low calorie meal replacements. But they are also Low carb (to the verge of ketosis) They are low protein and almost zero fat. Perhaps adding in a bit of protein may help The sugar rush will be occurring soon after ingestion and is normally a quick acting carb - i.e. it is probably not causing the 2 hr PP effect. Adding protein will give you some longer term sources of glucose since they too eventually get used for energy.
 
Normally a low glucose level will trigger release of an enzyme called Glucagon, and this is the signal to the liver to start creating glucose from whatever is lying around. i.e. gluconeogenesis will use proteins, ketones snippets of lipids and anything that looks like it could make something useful for the brain.. It seems this process may not be working correctly.


you may be going into ketosis and using lipid fat for energy instead of glucose through the process of lipolysis. When you hypo, do you have other symptoms of hypo, or is it just going by meter readings.

Thanks for that. I might try some low carb ones since if I do a protein lunch like eggs with chicken and don't take the bolus insulin I don't have a problem. It seems to be the quick acting carbs I have a problem with. The slimfast shakes have 15g of protein so I'm surprised they have that effect.

Yes I do have the shaky, dizzy symptoms when I go hypo thankfully
 
I avoid Slim fast products, too high in carbs or fat, very little protein, Aldi and Lidl both have high protein drinks and yoghurt in both pots pouches which taste nice
