Hello I’m new to this. Not sure what to do been put on metformin slow release 2000 ml. Any advise would be appreciated thanks

Hey @King kenny ,

How's the metformin working for you? It's a relatively mild drug that mostly tells your liver not to dump as much glucose (about 75% less). It doesn't do anything about what you eat. There's a welcome message for the newly diagnosed put together by the good folk of this forum : https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/basic-information-for-newly-diagnosed-diabetics.17088/ and I wrote my own little quick-start-guide: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/

Do you have any specific questions we might be able to help with?
Good luck, and welcome,
Jo

I haven't been on Metformin in 3 years, as it didn't agree with me and the slow release version wasn't available in the Netherlands then. I think, and I'm just guessing here, they basically want you to take it with your most substantial meal. Metformin is known for causing bowel and stomach problems when taken without food. But considering it can also be taken as a split dose (and you need 2 meals for that), I think you'd be okay with brekkie, if it's a big one due to shifts. Best would be eggs, bacon, cheese and/or high meat content sausages. :)

You could try ditching the metformin altogether by changing your diet, (all carbs, so not just sugars but starches too, turn to glucose once ingested), but that's up to you. As I said, Met didn't agree with me so I went a different route. Have been in the non-diabetic range ever since. Just something to keep in mind should things go awry in the belly-area.
