Morning all , hope everyone is okay?
I Wondered how many people use a smart Insulin pen ?
I wasn't given one when I was 1st diagnosed around 6 months ago and think it would be a great help I'm managing day to day how much insulin I've taken etc.
Is it a case of talking to your GP to get one or do I have to go to specialist at hospital?
Hope some one has the answer on here

It sounds convenient but I'd prioritise having the right insulin for your body...
Hopefully you already have a libre or dexcom?

(I'm In New Zealand andwould definitely prioritise a cgm over a smartpen)

In my experience regarding pens. (Been using them for years.) New models come along from time to time. (With the reusables.)
I’ve ordered spare pens on script now & again, only to find from the chemist the model of pen is no longer available, it’s been upgraded.
Now to be fair. They have issued me with the “new pen.” But I have had to update it with the surgery.. for my list.

I wouldn’t disagree regarding prioritising the right insulin regime for you.
Your best bet would be talking to your specialist about the actual pen. They will instruct your GP to amend the prescription.
I’ve actually known a DSN hand me a spare boxed pen she happens to have in the room?

I'm using one and it's connected with my Libre sensor and I use it for my short acting insulin but my long acting insulin is a ordinary pen but I do know that I don't use any prefilled insulin pens because they don't always work so I like to use a reusable insulin pen so using them is the same as using the novopen 5 which is the one under the novopen 6 the smart pen and the other one I've heard of from Novo Nordisk and they are easy to use and record each of your insulin injections and but they are the only smart insulin pens out up to now that works with a mobile phone and if you use a Libre sensor together......

Hi,

If I remember correctly. (From some smart pen users.) it can record “airshot” dosage too?
None of my pens support BT. But it does record the last dose & when with a LCD display on the button.
 
So I should of said I use a disposable novarapid pen currently and wanted to know if the smart pens are any good and worth upgrading to ?

Reusable pens are definitely worth upgrading to regardless of their smartness.
Reusable pens are much more robust, can deliver half units, the cartridges take up less space in your fridge (and luggage when travelling) and they are far better for the environment.
The smart feature is an added bonus.

To be honest, I do not understand why disposable pens are the default. The reusable ones are so much better.
