Does anyone have any problems eating smoked food?? I just wondered about smoked salmon, smoked mackerel etc. My aunty said that when she went to WeightWatchers ( *spits*) she wasn't allowed a lot of smoked mackerel. I really love it and smoked cheese is OK with me, I'm just wondering about anybody else noticing anything?? :D :D

I don't know about smoked food in general but for smoked salmon the problem for me is that its very salty and the next day I weigh at least a kilo more.

I like certain smoked products, cheese, fish sometimes.......not much though.

Probably the reason why WW don't recommend it is because they are more concerned with calories and fats. Smoked anything is usually higher in both calories and fats..........mostly very low in carbs, depending on how it is prepared. :) Negligible effect on Bg levels.

Could this be an addition to my arsenal of "putting weight on"didnt know smoked stuff was higher in cals . We often enjoy smoked cod loin. Does it work with bacon? I know some so called smoked food is merely flavoured and not actually smoked Why is smoked food higher in cals(getting all excited)

Hi Carol.
No expert but I think it all depends on the actual process, some foods are almost nil carbs but once some sort of coating has been used then the carbs increase, as for the calories again, all depends on the process. If it's pre-packaged check out the labels....there are just way too many listed to give a definitive answer. Some Bacon might be coated before smoking so again check the labels.

I'm certain I've read somewhere that smoked food are actually beneficial to diabetics? I can't remember the link/paper - but if I find it I'll post it here.

Rude people! Not being able to do the things I want to do.
Be careful eating too much smoked food.

In countries where they eat a lot of smoked food there is a higher rate of Bowel cancers.

There are also concerns from the EFSA about some of the colourings used in the smoking process being toxic.

Sue, does the countries you are referring too not just eat a higher percentage of meat anyway regardless of the toxic colourings? I know that there is a strong correlations between those who's diet is high in meat (specially processed) and bowel cancer and disease as the following article clearly states:

Hi Ken

There is a link to excess smoked food and cancer - some studies have suggested no more than 2- 4 portions a week.

But I have just done some comparisons on my analysis package and there really is not a difference between smoked and unsmoked - looked at mackerel, salmon and bacon.

Hi Ally.
Yes. It hasn't stopped me enjoying certain smoked products.......never have much, just in moderation. I think many of the links are tenuous to say the least.......worth knowing though if you want to get paranoid........

Yes Ken that is true - you have to look at all this information that gets bombarded at you and be realistic!

At least there is no difference in calories etc!

Are you snowed in - we have had a deluge again this morning and I am now having a panic about Xmas!

..........moderation is the key :)

Couldn't agree more, don't mind smoked bacon and mackerel fillets as it gives them that extra taste, also got a couple of smoked cheeses for my Christmas night indulgence of cheese and crackers! :D

There are no smoked or BBQ'ed foods eaten in my house for one reason only ...the carcinogens produced by the smoke and charring: But having said that I do like an occasional slice of homemade wholemeal toast well done and served with plenty of straight butter.
