Snacks and Putting on Weight

SJC your GFR is not to bad. It just shows mild kidney impairment so don't focus to much on how it will effect your kidneys. Just makes sure your U&E's are checked regularly and eat some meat to help raise your weight. A little protein won't harm you

Your eating very very little amounts of food. I would eat more calories in a range of food and have more insulin medication which ever you take.

Yes but my whole point was - calories from where...what? I am prediabetic so on no meds.

Thanks. I will add a bit more protein but I do usually have some protein at least twice a day as it is. I bought some belly pork today.

I hadn't been weighed for about 10 days. I am 7st 9lbs.

SJC can I ask how you lost a kidney? You know the renal have special dieticians that can help you

Hi
I lost the other kidney to cancer 2 years ago. I was never offered a dietician, just told by my consultant that I was to eat a lower protein low salt diet .

I would ask to be referred the next time you see your consultant. As they have their own dieticians. As I said your renal function is not to bad so I'm sure they would be of help for you. My GFR is 22 so I do know what I'm talking about. Good luck with it all

Like you I struggle to keep my weight on have never been overweight in my life When you are not overweight to start with as soon as you cut out the sugar stuff and starchy carbs you will loose weight and it is more significant if you don't really need to. When I was diagnosed as prediabetic I cut out all sugar stuff and some starchy carbs and lost weight straight away I have now reached a plateau but still have to watch my weight as I don't want to loose any more than I am now about 8.7st and I think I look to skinny.
I eat some bread...usually Bergen.., rye crackers and potatoes...I have never like rice or pasta...I have never cut any other vegetables or fruits from my diet I do low fat in most foods and I don't eat red meat but I do eat nuts as they are good fats so I just rely on what I do eat to keep the weight on I can't go to low carbs as I just loose more weight I think age is a factor as well I am 75 so my body now needs as many vitimin and minerals as it can get to keep reasonably healthy..I don't have any other medical problems.. and that means eating as many different vegetables and fruit as I can but I know a lot here will not agree with that

If it was me (which it isn't), I'd be pushing to see a dietician who has experience or specialises in renal patients. Your renal consultant (assuming you have one) should be able to do this, ask when you go to your next appointment. I haven't been a nurse for over 10 years now, but when I was, there were certain dieticians who specialised in certain categories of patients; I know we had renal dieticians anyway. It's worth asking.

I agree. I basically said the same. I know there are renal dieticians as I've attended them. The thing is a lot of renal patients are diabetic so they have an understanding of both. So definitely the way forward

Thanks. That must be very worrying for you.

I have never heard of renal dieticians. I have seen a hospital dietician recently but all she said was 'eat more' and of course she wasn't bothered about carbs etc

I am eating at least one pice of Burgen a day. I don't do low fat because of the added sugar and prefer the LCHF approach with full fat products. I just made myself a chicken curry and used coconut oil this time. Boy am I full!

The fruit part scares me a bit because actually from what I have read on the internet, the jury is out on whether Diabetics should force the issue with fruit. Sugar is sugar. I don't seem to tolerate fruit well but can manage 4 blueberries with 2 tblsp full fat yoghurt with a couple of almonds sprinkled in. I wish I was allowed to eat more nuts because that would help. I am thinking I am going to have to bite the bullet and increase carbs to maybe 100-120 a day.

4 Blue Berries! , Jesus you are restricted. I'd defiantly see a dietician. I'm sure you know calories are contained in everything so like many people have said eat higher quantities. Do you test your blood with a machine yourself? Do you have a highly active job?

Regards

I have fibromyalgia, arthritis and ME so I can't work. Sometimes I can barely get off my bed for long periods. I don't know where you all live but our dieticians are rubbish. I saw one only six weeks ago. I had to ask to see one. She just told me to eat more. It didn't help. I am not diabetic and I am not on dialysis so nobody cares really.

You don't need to be on dialysis to see a renal dietician. You just need to attend a renal clinic regularly. So if you have a renal consultant ask at next visit.

I saw my renal specialist about four weeks ago. He knows I have lost weight. He knows I was told I was prediabetic. He knows how ill I have been recently. He didn't even mention diet! He just said, hey in the 50's isnt too bad for your kidney.
I have no faith in the health service.
I will ring the kidney nurses up today and ask them but if it turns out to be a normal hospital dietician they send me too then God help me.

Sorry but I have had nothing but bad experiences from my hospital recently.

I'm sorry to hear that SJC. Just keep annoying them to they give you the help

He's right, your one kidney is working well and doesn't sound diseased at all.
Have a read. They say Protein only stuffs up an already crook kidney/s and good kidney/s are fine. Your one kidney at 50 is a hell of a lot better than someone with 2 kidneys and 50
