So much to learn!

I'm still feeling like the new girl in school with this diabetes nonsense. I thought I was getting my head around what I can and can't eat and have been following a low GI lifestyle (don't want to use the word "diet" because it isn't).

I've now spent a lot of time reading on these forums about LCLH and although it does seem like a good way to go, am having to re-learn all the goodies and baddies again! I think I'm going to try it, so watch out for random grumps from Pink Minx!

Seriously, can someone please invent an app which glows green in the supermarket when you point your phone at good food and red at bad food?! How good would that be?

OK, rant over - I'm clearly out of sorts this evening!

Happy Bank Holiday weekend everyone! :D

Happy BHW to you too. Keep reading the labels and soon they'll all be second nature. Low GI is a good start because it gives you the principles of food-checking. You just have to switch to low-carb and replace with higher fat.

Hi. AS DeeJayR says, keep reading the labels. Just focus on the total carbs and keep the daily total down as low as you sensibly can. Low-GI is better than high-GI but it's all carbs so a low-GI diet isn't that much use for diabetes; just focus on total carbs of any kind.

It does take time to get your head around it all. You basically have to turn everything we have been told on its head but it does work. Keep us informed of your progress.

I started the LCHF diet just over a week ago and I feel great and have lost 4lbs already. Just be aware that you will likely suffer some kind of 'withdrawal' symptoms e.g. shaking, sweating, headaches, blurred vision. as your body is craving carbs. This does pass and afterwards you will feel great.

Thanks all for your support. I've seen the results already in the glucose tests - it's seems like a miracle, doesn't it, when you see those lovely low numbers?! I'm going to keep it up because I can feel the difference already and it's only been a few days. I'm not nearly as hungry as I was when I was carbing - I can't believe it because I've thought for years that it was the carbs which filled me up!

I tried to explain what I was doing to my Mum at the weekend and she can't get her head around it at all - can't say I blame her, that generation was growing up at the end of the war and they couldn't be picky about what food they ate. The last couple of decades' diets have been about low fat, so diving into full-fat Greek yogurt is a complete luxury! 4ratbags, yes, exactly that! It seems counter-intuitive.

I don't tend to buy things off the shelf as I prefer to make everything from scratch, so am going to have to create a "big book of carb values" to help me! I also don't eat meat, so I'm trying to make it even more tricky for myself.

Purplepenguin - good luck - us purples and pinks need to stick together!
