Restricting carbs
I’ve only been on insulin since December (Type 2 using oral meds also) and I keep going hypo after eating unusual amount of carbs. For example; 120g carbs of pizza at 5pm (44 units of insulin and 1000 metformin) and 3.3 hypo by 9:20pm.
Does anyone have any idea why? I rang Diabetes UK careline and they couldn’t tell me anything.
Regards,
Sarah

Pizza is a weird one: the combination of a large amount of carbs and fat results in a delay in BG rises which could lead to BG drops followed by BG rises as the insulin works faster than the carbs are absorbed.

As a result, when eating this type of meal, it is common to split the insulin dose.

What are the oral meds?
Glicizide or some similar blood glucose lowering meds?

Sitagliptin does lower the spike after eating.
I would have a chat with your GP.
It does seem that your meds and insulin treatment is not quite right.

Sounds like reactive hypoglycemia of some kind ie. your body is over producing insulin in response to injected carbohysrates. Maybe you can get some medical advice to reduce your insulin producing medication.

Thanks for your replies. I do have my annual review next month so will be able to make adjustments then. I hope x
