I had a swelling in my leg, just above the knee. My GP sent me for x rays , and finally got an Ultrasound appointment some 7 weeks later , where the consultant said if I hadn't been in there that day , the next would have been an ambulance .
At every Doctor I saw , all "ASKED ME" was I a Diabetic . my response wss , "Not that I know of" , no I never had any of the symptoms they asked .
I was admitted straight away and put on intro anti biotics, but it did not reduce the infection , so a Cross cut surgery was needed , to remove the abscess .
I was dischraged and was required to see a GP Nurse every day to clean and chnage the dressing on the open wound , and to see a Hospital oyt patient Doctor every week .
After a week, I just happened to say to the GP Nurse , how everyone had asked me iof I was Diabetic , but NO ONE had ever done a test , and could I for my own sanity have one done by her .. Next day with "my sample bottle" in hand she did the dip test , and her eyes went wide, and then did a blood finger prick test , with a result of 19.9 mmol/L .
I was then urgently moved in to the GP, who took a blood sample to be sent off, and that then came back as 16.9 ...
This was 2020 February , just as Covid was making itself evident , ...
I have no idea at what point any medical person would have bothered to do a test , and only that I asked for one was it discovered I was a T2, the support because of C19 was all pretty much nil with all the usual appointments being cancelled , flu and Pneumonia jabs not given etc, so pretty Pi** poor really.
I have only recently had a Heart Attack that resulted in a CABG x 2 , and the meds I am on are known to increase blood sugars , so now trying to manage a Nutrition factor of low saturated fats (there goes my food groups Ive been having since T2 and carb reduction) , and the Carbs reduction needed.
The instructions post OHS is to eat carbs , well thats not likely (buy a Heart food cook book, its all carbs , buy a Diabetic one and its all Meat proteins .... add that to the Meds that raise the sugars , life now is 100% worse than it was before .
Salmon and Eggs , with Broccoli and Cauliflower are my staple food, with Chicken and spinnich ..
I did still wonder just what would have happened if I had never of asked for that Test myself ... for what it costs , it should become a standard to be done on anyone when they are hospital admitted or seeing a GP after a long period of never doing so .
so through groups and forums and face book pages , I have learnt a lot , and hope to contribute where I can and be of some worth .
Than you all
PS , I am a biker live and breath for them, having ridden in lots of countries of the world and most of the USA ,and thats all I have to say about that
